Makino Yui -- Seiyuu, Singer, Pianist

Makino Yui 牧野由依 does the piano accompaniment in a preview clip for the fall anime Sketchbook ~full color'S~, in which she plays one of the main characters. She will also sing the ED.

You can see the preview clip on the show's homepage. Click the little white banner near the top middle of the page, with the red stripe on the left of it.

Yui says in her blog that she was just asked in an impromptu way to do the preview accompaniment, and she chose to use a tune from Brahms. She said she tried to give it a nostalgic quality like hearing music filtering out of the practice rooms after school. She is currently a fourth-year piano student at a Tokyo-area music university.

Makino-san started playing piano at the age of three, and did piano accompaniment to films while still a child. She also appeared in two films, several commercials, and a TV drama, according to Japanese Wikipedia.

She has had five different radio shows, and as a singer has put out four singles and an album. She sang the OPs for both ARIA series. She turned 21 in January of this year.

There are a number of Makino Yui PVs on YouTube here and here, as well as clips from a recent series of appearances in China, and there is an interview with her about her musical work for ARIA here.

Her seiyuu debut was as Sakura in Tsubasa Chronicle in 2005. She was nominated for best young seiyuu of 2006 for her outstanding portrayal of Misaki in Welcome to the NHK.

She is doing a nice job with the character Lapis in recent episodes of Kaze no Stigma. Her seiyuu voice has a unique quality I love: a kind of fresh directness and intimacy, and somehow almost a boyishness.

On her home page, she says her favorite musical artists are film composer Ennio Morricone and French classical pianist Pascal Rogé. Here are her pages on ANN and Wikipedia, and here is her homepage.

Birth of a Star, or Maybe Two, in Touka Gettan 21

A new seiyuu star was born in episode 21 of Touka Gettan. And maybe a star seiyuu became a star writer, too.

Episode 21 was written by Noto Mamiko, the third of three seiyuu who have written episodes for the show. The others were Shimizu Ai (#18) and Yamamoto Maria (#11 and #13).

Hayami SaoriAnd Noto-kawaii wrote great lines for 16-year-old Hayami Saori, who stars as Momoka in the show. This is the first episode that Momoka really carries, and young Hayami is amazing. Her voice is colorful and modulated and she gives delicate shades of meaning to the lines. I've been impressed with her work before, but this was really outstanding.

The idea of having seiyuu write episodes seems like a gimmick, but it has worked out quite well. Yamamoto Maria's episodes were workmanlike. Shimizu Ai did a fine comic beach episode. And Noto Mamiko has given us a key episode in the development of the show, the episode in which Momoka realizes she loves Touka.

Now, the seiyuu was not exactly on her own doing the writing. The storyboard was by Mochizuki Tomomi, the lead writer, and no doubt he was able to massage the script as he wished in making the final storyboard.

Noto MamikoBut I would not be at all surprised to see the name Noto Mamiko, or even Shimizu Ai or Yamamoto Maria, popping up as a writer for other shows. Moon Phase Notes is full of praise for the work of Noto and Mochizuki in this episode. One thing I think Noto did extremely well was create lines that were easy for the seiyuu to say and that had poetry and music in them that she could bring out. But we already knew from her radio show that Noto was someone with intelligence and style.

Hayami Saori is destined to be a star, in my opinion. But her singing is so good, especially in the ED (YouTube), that I'm not sure if she will be a seiyuu star or a singing star. Maybe both.

For details of the episode, check out Subculture Anime Blog.

There is an interview with Touka (Ise Mariya) and Momoka (Hayami Saori) on YouTube. The interviewer is Yamamoto Maria, lol. There is a printed interview with those two and Makoto (Kitamura Eri) here, with pictures. Both interviews are in Japanese.

And I have to say that I think anyone who isn't watching Touka Gettan is missing something special. The show has had its ups and downs, but the animation is superb, the music outstanding, the voice-acting excellent, and the plot intriguing. There is some delightful romance and a lot of top-notch fanservice. And despite the comedy, this is definitely a serious show.

Hirano Aya -- Recent Images

HiranoAya 平野綾 posted this great photo on her blog over the weekend. I can't resist posting it for others to see.

She took it with her own cell-phone camera after spending the better part of a day getting her hair dyed and styled. She said how much she enjoyed sitting there talking with the stylists and working out what color to use. It ended up being a mix of a number of colors, with a little pink included.

Photos like this, taken at arm's length with her cell-phone, seem to me to show Aya more real than the pro shots where she is posing for the photographer and the staff. In these informal shots, she appears to be more herself.

And that self has been going through a lot recently. The big success of Lucky Star and the Suzumiya Haruhi live event DVD are good things, but they also increase the pressure on her to make the most of her current popularity. And meanwhile she has just spent a week in hospital getting her appendix out, with the otaku "community" outside raging about a supposed relationship with rocker/seiyuu Taniyama Kishou.

In any case, for me, these personal photos show the most attractive Aya: natural, vulnerable, serious, often comic. Here are two more photos from that day, taken by the stylist. Aya was getting her hair done for jacket photos and the PV (music video) of her new single, which will come out in the fall. I've added a photo that a horrified post on 2channel said made her look 35. Lol.

Current Anime Series Popularity -- Japan vs. Abroad

I'm taking the simplest possible method of judging how otaku in Japan and outside it grade the current shows: current number of threads on 2channel vs. number of posts on AnimeSuki. This is more an index of interest than approval, but it at least gives us some comparisons. Actual Japanese TV ratings are, as usual, considerably different, with shows for kids and girls rating far higher than on 2channel.

Among otaku in Japan and abroad, the top show of the spring season is Nanoha StrikerS, by far. On 2channel, the next two shows are Lucky Star and Gurren Laggan, whereas on AnimeSuki they are Claymore and Lucky Star. Dennou Coil and Idolmaster Xenoglossia (two very different shows) are much higher on the 2channel list than on AnimeSuki, whereas Kaze no Stigma, Darker than Black and Lovely Complex are much higher on AnimeSuki. My guess is that the percentage of female posters on AnimeSuki is higher than on 2channel, which tends to ignore shoujo shows, such as Lovely Complex.

For the summer, the top show on 2channel is School Days, by a large margin, followed by Higurashi2, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, and Zero no Tsukaima2. On AS, the top show is School Days, ahead of Higurashi2 and the last two episodes of Code Geass, followed by Zero no Tsukaima and then Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. The linguistic complexity -- and maybe the style of humor -- of Zetsubou Sensei may explain why it is more a favorite in Japan. And School Days may have higher mind-share in Japan because people are more familiar with the original game.

Here are fullish listings, first for spring and then for summer, listed first by 2channel popularity, then by AnimeSuki popularity:

Hirano Aya Leaves Hospital

The long hiatus on Hirano Aya's normally very active blog is now explained. She has just posted that she has spent the last six days in hospital, for her appendix.

"Sorry for keeping you waiting so long. I apologize for not being able to update the blog. Actually, I have just spent six days in hospital, for my appendix! But now I'm healthy and happy and out of hospital! I've got lots of strength and am getting right back to work! Don't worry about me at all! Let's get together at the Sumomo event next week!"

Aya is scheduled to take part in the open recording of a Sumomo Radio show on the Sunday after next.

Hirano Aya Attacked Mercilessly on 2channel

Maybe otaku really are the scum of the Earth. Whatever, some people on 2channel have been directing salacious personal attacks against Hirano Aya 平野綾 for the past week, following her publication of a couple of shots of her with Taniyama Kishou after his concert a week and a half ago. People both for and against Aya leaped to the conclusion that she and he were an item.

The Hirano Aya threads on 2channel have been wrecked by a constant flow of salacious ascii art, insults, and blocks of repeated statements such as "they're crying, lol" (about her fans) and saying she's a loose woman.

<<-- Photo: Aya with a signed copy of her photobook "H," at the autograph session two weeks ago.

Aya has not updated her blog for four days now, the longest time it has fallen silent all year. I imagine she hardly knows what to say or feel, if she has seen any of the disgusting sh*t being posted on 2channel.

The photos, which I posted a few days ago, show her not-quite-hugging Taniyama after his concert. Kiiyan (his nickname) is a rough-looking 31-year-old seiyuu/rocker who is supposedly very successful with women. He and Aya probably first met when they both had roles in Kiddy Grade several years ago, and then again in Busou Renkin last fall. I believe their real relationship is most likely that of senior/junior. In her blog, she has previously thanked him for his help.

But an anonymous blog post added fuel to the fire, claiming that the author had seen them together in Shinjuku, holding hands and flirting. This unsupported testimony goes with the spurious list of quotes from Aya that has been going around for the past year or so, appearing to show her having little respect for otaku and voice-acting, and wanting to be an all-round entertainer. Most of the quotes have been shown to be false or taken out of context, although none of them seems unrealistic to me. If I were her, I would probably not want to date an otaku, either. And I think it's legitimate for an 18-year-old to say she has too much self-respect to voice ero-games. But she probably didn't say any of these things, except as a joke on a radio show, or in character.

<<--The young Aya some fans miss.

On the one hand, I am worried for her state of mind. It must be very difficult to ride out such a storm of personal attack without suffering emotionally. On the other hand, it is interesting to speculate just why a group of otaku hate her so much.

Certainly, fans of established stars resent her success, especially since her voice work is not as professional as theirs. I personally prefer it, but it is not as smooth or sure, and people clearly both resent her popularity and do not think she deserves it.

She does give off an "ojou-sama" sort of aura, as if she comes from a privileged world. Her family appears to be well-to-do, and she went to a prestigious private high school. To some, she is like the child of privilege who gets too many advantages.

And in her blog, she is fairly open about her ambition to be a singer, and her pictures of herself in various outfits and poses can be seen as exhibitionistic and self-absorbed. But people don't seem to criticise Tanaka Rie for her cosplay photos, and many of us love Aya's blog. Perhaps she is a bit American, after all.

<<--The mature Aya some people hate and call a "dekob**ch."

She is certainly not hiding her love of flashy clothes or of ojousama-like afternoon teas, and by showing her real preferences may be attempting to woo female fans, rather than faking maid costumes aimed at otaku. Some otaku clearly feel insulted that she is not their creature and has ambitions beyond just having them as fans.

Largely, I suspect the 2channel capers are the fevered responses of inexperienced young men whom anything sexual turns mad. The hint of her with Kiiyan both excites and disappoints them. Some dream of being with her themselves and go all potty-mouth when their dream is shattered -- either their dream of her purity or their dream of being with her. The same thing happened to Horie Yui, whose 2channel threads became a festival of gross innuendo after the head of her agency was arrested for sexual interference with an aspiring seiyuu.

I can almost sympathize with fans who began as fans of Aya as a purer-than-the-driven-snow mid-teen ingenue, and can't adjust to her as a real adult, who may even have actual physical desires. This is why, as she herself said at Anime Expo, it is forbidden for a seiyuu to have (or admit they have) a boyfriend. But I personally like her better as the maturing wannabe rocker and near-adult she has become.

It is true that she has brought some of this on herself by her declared intention of becoming "sexier" this year. The change has attracted many people and repelled others, who are now taking out their frustrations in 2channel. I don't really blame otaku in general, just the group who have gone crazy on 2channel. I imagine they are largely the same people who have hated Aya since I've been aware she existed. There is a constant undercurrent of hatred for her on 2channel that has just now risen to dominate her threads.

In any case, her photobook continues to sell well, and a second printing has been announced. And any CD associated with Lucky Star seems to sell, sell, sell, perhaps in part by association with her.

On Holiday with Koshimizu Ami, Kadowaki Mai, and Itsuki Yui

Koshimizu Ami, Kadowaki Mai, and Itsuki Yui are off on holiday together, going to a hot spring, etc., and they have set up a "Three Sisters" photo blog of their trip. It looks as if they may be posting a lot of pics, so it might be interesting. They have posted at least once an hour so far. You can follow their trip here.

Amisuke, 21, is one of the top young names in voice-acting. She is Karen in Code Geass and Tenma in School Rumble. Maita (26, in glasses) was Souju in Futakoi Alternative and will be Mimi in Kodomo no Jikan. Yuin (lank, dark hair) was Kira in Futakoi and Moe in Da Capo.

Each of the three has a good blog of their own, as well: Amisuke, Maita, Yuin. But they have set up the "Three Sisters" blog as a separate blog on Yuin's site.

EDIT: It's now the middle of the night in Japan, but they kept posting about a shot an hour up to midnight, including shots of them lounging around in their room in yukatas with one of those wonderful ryoukan meals covering the table.

Wonder Festival 2007

Appeared at the "Wonder Festival" at Tokyo Big Site
We were meeting so early that I had to get up at 4am.
Even though it's summer, it was still dark (lol)
Today was the Lucky Channel open recording session
Emiri and I were secret guests,
so I couldn't tell you about it beforehand. Sorry!

We wore summery yukatas
This is about the third year I've worn my yukata.
We had obis
that matched the colors of our characters' ribbons,
and we even had hair ornaments.

← Just before the event,
a shot backstage.

↑ A lot of people came and saw us (>▽<)
According to the staff, there were almost 2000 people there.
With the heat in the venue and the lights on stage, it was pretty hot
But anyway, the audience was in good spirits,
and recording with everyone gave a very enjoyable feeling
We met a lot of people in the handshake session(^^)
and could look them in the eye
During the event, I tried as much as I could
to look in everyone's face individually

↑ Afterwards, in the green room.

How was today's open recording session? Did you enjoy it??
I really enjoyed it.
Thank you to everyone who came
By the way, it seems that today's recording session
will be put on CD and will come out with a magazine.
So people who didn't come - and people who did - be sure to listen, okay?

Hirano Aya Authors New Photo Book

On the heels of the wild success of Hirano Aya Photobook H, Hirano Aya is now authoring her own photobook 1/19 Bpm, which will be a "memorial" of her life so far. It will come out on 19 September.

The book is called a "photo-essay" of her life, and will include known and unknown photos of her that have been taken over the years, such as those of her wearing glasses in the "Love Megane" series, and shots from photoshoots earlier this year, particularly the shoot on Okinawa in which she was first photographed in a swimsuit. The swimsuit pictures have not been published before.

She will include some of her own drawings, and will include a description of a week in her life, as well as inside stories and reflections on her roles and music over the past year. She will answer 50 of the questions sent to her by fans. And there will be family pictures of her as a baby and young child.

The book will not be published by Kadokawa, publisher of the first photobook and of the Suzumiya Haruhi novels, but by Shufunotomo ("Housewife's Companion") Publishing, which specializes in cooking, health, children, etc. -- but is also the publisher of Seiyuu Grand Prix magazine. Many of the later photos will apparently be from the magazine.

According to the publisher's note on Amazon, Aya herself came up with the idea and was deeply involved in the planning of the publication, as well as contributing various essays. Price will be Y1890 (US$16). Info from an article on Seiyuu Watch and from Amazon Japan.

The October issue of Seiyuu Grand Prix magazine, which comes out 10 September, will include what appears to be another special photobook of Aya, who turns 20 on 8 October.

Aaya, Shizuka-sama at GranRodeo Concert

Seiyuu Taniyama Kishou ("Kishow") and musician Iizuka Masaaki ("e-zuka") are the group GranRodeo. Their concert in Yokohama Sunday boasted a star-studded guest list of seiyuu: Hirano Aya, Itou Shizuka, Shiraishi Ryouko, Fukuyama Jun.

In the photo, Kishow is on the left. For a sample of GranRodeo's energetic rock, check YouTube. Not my style, but Kishow has a strong voice and the music is professional. (click photos to enlarge)

Below left are Fukuyama Jun (Lelouche in Code Geass) and Koyama Tsuyoshi (Kurou in Utawarerumono) showing a nipple with Shiraishi Ryouko (left, Hayate in Hayate) and Itou Shizuka (Rei in Marimite, etc.) Below right is Hirano Aya with Ryouko and Shizuka-sama. In her blog Aya said how beautiful the yukata were.

And here are a couple of shots from Hirano Aya's blog:

Kishow says he is "a child of Eros" and claims never to have failed with any girl he tried for. Now that it is clear that there is no romance between Hirano Aya and Sugita Tomokazu, some 2channel posters are speculating about a relationship with Kishow, who is 31. The viral publicity machine grinds on.

The next day, Aya put on a GranRodeo tank top and fake tattoo she got at the concert, saying she looked forward to the reaction if she wore that to a recording session. Since she and Granrodeo are both Lantis recording artists, I suspect the reaction would be positive, lol. She said she envied Kishow being up there and looked forward to a live of her own. And she said she wished there were Aya goods like the ones sold at the GranRodeo show.

The right-hand pic of Aya with e-zuka (left) and Kishow (right) is from her blog in April and shows them at a Busou Renkin after-after party. Taniyama Kishou was Takayuki in KGnE (Rumbling Hearts), Takeya in DearS, Ken-chan in Lamune, Tsukimori in Corda D'Oro, etc. GranRodeo does the ED for Kotetsujin Jeeg, and has done the OPs for the last two Angelique series.

Haruhi DVD Sells 60,000 in US, Helped by YouTube and Fansubs

YouTube and fansubs helped the first DVD of Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu sell 60,000 units in the US. This compares with only 80,000 of each DVD sold in Japan.

This information is from an interview with the president of Kadokawa Holdings, Kadokawa Tsuguhito, published in the prestigious Japanese financial daily Nihon Keizai Shinbun.

Kadokawa, publisher of the Haruhi novels and rights-holder for the anime, has adopted an internet policy that includes a cooperation agreement with YouTube. The 60,000 sales figure is particularly impressive considering that the show has not been shown on TV in the US, but only through fansubs and to some extent on YouTube.

The figures appear to confirm arguments from fans that fansubs may not hurt anime sales as much as thought, since they also publicize the shows.

To Help You Sleep, VAs Count Sheep

It's late, but you can't sleep. Why not have Miyano Mamoru or Tamura Yukari count sheep for you? That's the premise behind a series of CDs produced by Honey Bee.

Each CD features two well-known voice actors, with one counting up to 200 sheep, and the next counting 201 to 400. Names featured on CDs already released include Ishida Kei, Houshi Souichirou, Suwabe Junichirou, Suzuki Chihiro, and Itou Kentarou. Next out will be "Can we sleep together?" featuring the voices of Fukuyama Jun and Kishio Daisuke.

Following that, in September, will come the first all-female CD: Tamura Yukari and Saitou Chiwa. They will be followed by Midorikawa Hikaru and Okiayu Ryotarou in October, Miyano Mamoru and Taniyama Kishou in November, and Wakamoto Norio in December.

Lucky Star -- Patty and Yui's VAs Do Dinner

Sasaki Nozomi (Patricia Martin) and Nishihara Saori (cousin Yui) had dinner together Friday night at a pasta restaurant in Shinjuku. They posted pictures of each other on their respective blogs (Nozomi's and Saori's).

Nozomi-chan (24) called Saori her "goddess." and said the meal was a very happy time. Nishihara-san (38) called Nozomi "so cute," and said they talked all through dinner. Sasaki Nozomi made a glorious anime debut last summer, as Nanami in Bokura ga Ita. Nishihara Saori is a veteran of commercials and narration, but Yui-neesan is her first named role in an anime.

Nozomi-chan, a university graduate, has some interesting, somewhat poetic pieces in her blog, which she updates at least daily. Although she also takes some good photos, the one of Nishihara-san is not one of them, so here are professional shots of both women.

Hirano Aya, Jazz Singer!?

I just heard Aya's song on the third character song CD for the anime Sumomomo Momomo. Now she's a jazz singer. She keeps surprising me.

"Flying Horse, Uma Kamen Love Theme" features a lot of English and a male singer/group called LotusJuice. Aya not only has both Japanese and English scat passages, but really uses the full range and strength of her voice. At first, I felt she wasn't quite getting it, but when she started to soar and dive, around the one-minute mark, and then especially after the four-minute mark, I was amazed.

When she said in her blog that she liked Shiina Ringo, I wondered when we'd ever hear it. Maybe this is the beginning. Perhaps she is finding a style that suits her: wild, free riffing. Here and in the very different case of the Lucky Star ED collection, she's at her best when she goes off into wild invention.

I believe the photo above left shows her at the recording session for this song, in May for a June release. In her blog, she profusely thanked the staff for getting her such a "sexy" song. The photo above right is a recent shot of her "as Angela Aki," as she said in her blog.

Sumomomo Momomo Character Song CD3 is available from amazon.co.jp for ¥1500. You can sample the song on YouTube.
