Buono! -- Shugo Chara ED hits #3 on the Charts

"Honto no Jibun" ("True Self"), the ED for the new anime Shugo Chara, has entered the music charts at #3, with sales of almost 9000 units. I've been captivated by the song since I first heard it, and it now appears that a lot of people in Japan feel the same way. I think it's the best idol-pop I've heard.

The song is performed by Buono!, a new three-person group made up of members from the young-teen idol groups °C-ute and Berryz Koubou. Shugo Chara itself is a highly entertaining Saturday-morning shoujo magical girl anime that has some character depth.

Buono! is made up of (l-r) Suzuki Airi 鈴木愛理 (13) from °C-ute and Natsuyaki Miyabi 夏焼雅 and Tsugunaga Momoko 嗣永桃子 (both from Berryz Koubou and both 15). From the PV, they seem to have been chosen for their singing rather than their dancing, but they are competent dancers, anyway. And their voices work extremely well together, in my opinion.

Here are the Honto no Jibun PV, a live performance (to show they can sing without technical assistance), and the animated Shugo Chara ED on YouTube.

Buono!, Berryz Koubou and °C-ute are all from Hello! Project, the organization that produces the continuing series of older-teen idol groups called Morning Musume. This is the heart of the Japanese teen idol machine. This time, they seem to me to have produced some good music.

Here are Buono's home page and Wikipedia page. Here are the Wikipedia pages for Hello! Project, Berryz Koubou and °C-ute.

UPDATE:
On Wednesday, the song was at #3, Thursday #5, Friday #8. Next Wednesday, we'll see where it ended up for the week. The daily rankings are from a small group of stores, the weekly rankings from a larger group.

UPDATE 2: There are some high-quality streamed versions of Buono! videos on stage6.divx.com, including: (1) the first public performance, in what looks like an open-air shopping mall; (2) the PV; (3) a closed-studio performance for Hello Morning; (4) a closed-studio dance version; and now (5) a TV live performance, with a big audience. They basically do the same dance routine in every one, gradually getting better at the whole performance as they go along. The audience at the TV live went wild, with some reason.

Here is a YouTube video of the Hello Morning performance. The other versions are there, too.

Poll: SeiMoe -- Who is the Most Attractive Seiyuu?

There are many beautiful seiyuu. Which do you think is the most attractive? The poll at right includes the names of 75 Japanese voice actresses. And I have made a page with pictures of all 75, to remind you of what they look like. Click the screencap below to go to the pictures:

Who do I think is the most attractive? If I had to choose one person, it would be Miyazaki Ui (Iroha in Sumomomo mo Momo mo) . But there are so many that I could choose: Sanpei Yuuko, Chihara Minori, Fukuhara Kaori, Hirano Aya, Kudou Haruka, Paku Romi, Chiba Saeko, Tanaka Rie, Gotou Saori, Noto Mamiko, Shiina Hekiru, Yukana.... Your preferences will no doubt be different: beauty is in the eye of the beholder. As I said, there are a lot of choices.
I've included some people that are some of my favorite performers, but whom I personally can't imagine voting for: Kawasumi Ayako, Yahagi Sayuri, Horie Yui, Kugimiya Rie, Tamura Yukari (yes, I know, I'm crazy). I've tried to find equally good photos of everyone, but I'm afraid I didn't totally succeed.

For 2channel's opinion of who is the "moe-est" seiyuu -- based mainly on their work -- see my previous post. There, it was in fact Kugimiya Rie, Horie Yui, and Tamura Yukari who headed the poll.

I'll keep this poll going for a few days, to give people a chance to find it. There's a ridiculous number of names on the list, but if you want to vote for someone who isn't on it, please vote in a comment and I'll tally your vote when I make the results post.

Who's the Moe-est Seiyuu of all? Kugimiya Rie, Says 2channel

There is a thread on 2channel, the Japanese discussion board, that asks this question every month. As of October 18, the totals for October put Kugimiya Rie (picture) far in the lead. Horie Yui is second and Tamura Yukari is third. I've linked their names to samples of their voices.

The seiyuu whose voice I personally think is most moe, Sasaki Nozomi, has zero votes. Another seiyuu I think is incredibly moe, the newcomer Hanazawa Kana, has two (2) votes. Another, Yahagi Sayuri, has one (1) vote.

The fact that the seiyuu I pay most attention to, Hirano Aya, has three (3) votes is an indication of the disdain that many hard-core 2channelers feel for her. There are a few votes for male (m) seiyuus, which I think may be comments on their sexuality. And there are a number of names in the list that I don't know, but that I believe are older seiyuus.

In any case, here are this month's totals so far, as of 18 October:

Hirano Aya's Birthday Week

Various groups of colleagues have thrown little birthday parties for Aya over the last ten days, each with at least one cake. Surely this will help her fatten up a bit, lol. In any case, here are a few photos from her blog.

The party she posted about most was the one given her by the cast and staff of Eyeshield 21: Yamaguchi Kappei, Irino Miyu and Miyano Mamoru (left, l-r). They also gave her an umbrella, perhaps for protection from the rain of insults from 2channel.

The Eyeshield 21 staff gave her a bottle of Dom Perignon Champagne (to go with the beer she's holding in the umbrella picture). Like any newly-legal drinker, she appears to be thrilled. She said she spilled a lot in opening it: her "first clumsiness as a 20-year-old." Aya joked that Nakagawa Shouko, who is also on the show, wasn't a great drinker and flushed after drinking only a few milliters. A "moe-element" for Shouko-chan, laughed Aya.

I think Aya admires and envies Shouko, the TV personality/idol/seiyuu. Aya might like to be the same, but in a different order: seiyuu/idol/TV personality.

People she was working with on her idol activities, and on the new Suzumiya Haruhi game (Suzumiya Haruhi no Tomadoi) both gave her little parties. Left: "Team Aya," the idol people. Right, the SHnT people:

Over the past ten days, she has received innumerable cakes and not a few flowers, and like the idol she is, was able to smile fairly convincingly for every one:

From the staff of her radio show, Animelo Mix, she received a bottle of sake called "Niconico Tarou," which means "Smiling Tarou." But this is perhaps also a reference to her videos on the Japanese video site Niconico Douga, where viewers can post graffiti-like comments on the video. A number of comments are insulting attacks on Aya herself. 2channelers speculated that the gift might be a joke at her expense, but I think she's probably well aware of what goes on there.

On 2channel, people have long said that she has no friends, especially no friends in the industry. Now some people are saying that the shots with the Eyeshield 21 cast -- now and in past blog items -- show that she is friendly with other seiyuu -- especially men. I don't think we can really tell anything either way, but I thought I'd mention their speculation, anyway.

Finally, a photo that I think shows Aya's nice self-mockery, which seems to me to appear quite often. In the caption to this pic, she thanks everyone and says she turned 20 "without incident." "The first year of my twenties. What kind of year will it be, I wonder?"

Seiyuu Fukuhara Kaori and Her Mother Visit Kyoto

Fukuhara Kaori (Tsukasa in Lucky Star) and her mother made a trip to Kyoto recently. In part because I think Kaorin is in the running for prettiest of all active seiyuu, I thought I'd translate her brief blog post about the trip:

A long time ago, I asked my manager to adjust my schedule so that mother and I could go on a trip to Kyoto. And so we went on a rather extravagant holiday, two women together.

It made me so glad to watch mother’s happy face.

My own number one goal was to go to the Entertainers’ Shrine at the Kurumazaki Shrine.

I worshipped there around a year and a half ago. I wanted to go back and report the decisions I'd made and what had happened to me over that time, and to renew my amulet. And I did!

We got a full helping of Kyoto, visiting other temples, riding in a rickshaw, and eating delicious food. (^^)

It’s the first time mother and I have gone on a trip alone together. We made memories that will last a lifetime.

When we said goodbye to Kyoto, we promised to go there together again.

I really love the elegance of Kyoto. In another year or so, let's go again.

We stayed in a wonderful hotel, part of the same chain as the hotel I stayed in on the trip to Hatsushima I wrote about in the blog before.

Hirano Aya -- LOVE★GUN #6 for its First Week on the Charts

As leaked yesterday, Hirano Aya's LOVE★GUN single has placed #6 in the Oricon weekly singles chart, with sales of 12,536.

That's less than 100 units short of #5, and about 300 units short of #4, but far behind L'Arc-en-ciel's #1 song, which sold 115,000 units. This was a good week for the release, however: in most recent weeks, those sales would have ranked LOVE★GUN closer to #10.

In her blog, Aya says its a good start for her three singles in three months, thanks people very much, and says it encourages her to do her best.

The photo was in her blog today. She says it's a new shorter cut and hairstyle and laughs that it makes her head feel lighter.

This isn't the first time that she has reminded me of the 1940s movie star Veronica Lake, who was both a glamorous star and a natural comedienne. She was apparently also famous as the first star to have a "peek-a-boo bangs" hairstyle that covered half her face.

"Indestructible Fragility" -- Hirano Aya's Lyrics for LOVE★GUN

Here are the lyrics written by Hirano Aya 平野綾 for LOVE★GUN, her current single. First is a translation, then a transliteration (the Japanese pronunciation), then the original Japanese.

The lyrics give further reason why she waited until she had turned 20 (the age of adulthood in Japan) before releasing this song. The meaning of the expression "love gun" is probably a combination of romantic metaphor and the obvious one: part of the male anatomy. It's tempting to think she is actually speaking as herself ("indestructible fragility," "the tears I always cry").

The lyrics are as difficult as many Japanese lyrics, so if anyone can correct anything, please let me know. Right at the beginning, she changes a couple of things in the recording, but I have given the lyrics as published in the CD booklet. Since about half the words are English (or actually Engrish), in the translation I have italicized lines that were originally Japanese.

The early word on 2channel is that LOVE★GUN was #6 for its first week on the charts, with sales of 12,536 CDs. If true, that would be a great result for Aya. Here is the video on YouTube.

Hirano Aya -- "Thank You" for Making Love Gun #4

From Hirano Aya's blog (click images to enlarge):

#4 on the Daily Charts

"Love Gun" has been released!!
#4!! ☆~(ノ><)ノ
Thank you so much!!
I'm really happy.
Since I haven't been able to update the diary for a while,
Maybe I'll give a bit of a look backstage...
Today I'll show what the PV set looks like.

In the Morning

Rock in the morning
Unh.
Here comes the big obstacle: the guitar.
I had my guitar and was practicing in the green room
Right up until we started.
Do the results show?

No Strength in My Shoulders

I'm trying too hard and moving too much, I'm told.
The proof is that I broke a pick during the intro.
I thought we shouldn't stop during recording,
So I used my fingers to pick
And ended up bleeding around the first knuckle.
Trying too hard (´~`;)

Pretty Well Used to It (´∀`)

Even though I have to work at lip-synching,
I gradually settle down.
The person in the picture looks properly cool.
But once I start moving, I'm done for.

After Filling My Stomach

This is a shot while they're changing the set!
Empty head. Clean mind.
...nnn. It's hard o(><)o

Studio Scene

This is what it's like in the studio!
That distant bit of pink is me.
It takes a lot of staff.

Hirano Aya's New Single Debuts at #4

Well, it looks as if her constant work, constant practice, and constant publicity are paying off: Hirano Aya's "Love Gun" debuted at #4 on its first day on the Oricon singles charts.

This is the first of three singles in three months for Aaya, and it's a rocker. I was unconvinced after hearing bits of it earlier, but having seen and heard the whole thing, now I'm sold. The music and the singing are both good entertainment.

And we really can see some results of the fact that one of her favorite singers is Avril Lavigne. I tend to think of Japanese hard rock as rather weak, but this has something. Some Japanese fans continue to regret the loss of their innocent teen Aya, but she is more interested in becoming a sexy young adult.

I enjoy the sexy/humorous/artsy music video, as well. Here's the video on YouTube. It's provocative, but as in her blog, she makes fun of herself, too.

Here are the lyrics. They are largely Japanese, but there is quite a bit of Engrish in them, courtesy of Aya, who wrote them herself.

The anti-Hirano forces on 2channel are howling, but now I think it's in fear rather than delight. Aaya may really have a singing career. Ever since I started taking an interest in Aaya a year ago, people have been posting that she is finished. And all that time, she has actually been getting more popular.

There's no doubt that some of her success, if it comes, will be based on her looks and the sexy clothes she's starting to wear, rather than her music. But that would not make her unique among singers. And she actually is beginning to rock. She's no longer quite the wannabe rocker that she seemed to me before.

And she does play guitar, as we see her doing in the video. Although I would be surprised if her playing has been mixed so it is very audible. She's pretty modest about her playing when she mentions it in her blog.

Aaya turned 20 on Monday, and exults over it on her blog. It's been a long time coming, she says. Now as an adult, she says she feels a sense of responsibility and is determined to be "a woman who will not be defeated."

She has also just started a stint as host of the radio show "Radio Animelo Mix." She started the first show saying she wasn't sure whether she was more nervous or more sleepy...but she was hungry, too. And she slipped through three different versions of her voice in the first minute. She is apparently the first host who has not had a partner, so it was Aaya gabbling on for 25 minutes, sometimes amusing, sometimes peremptory, always personable. The previous generation of hosts was a dynamic duo of Gotou Yuuko and Shintani Ryouko.

The staff of stores in Akihabara won't be defeated, either. There are big displays for the single, with various come-ons embedded. One sign lists her three upcoming singles and says: "Buy them. That's an order from the brigade chief (i.e., Haruhi)."

Another display (below) has Konata point out Aya's zettai ryouiki ("absolute territory" -- the space of flesh between high stockings and skirt) on a "life-size" poster they are giving away with every purchase.

UPDATE: Charts for Thursday 11 October are out, and Love Gun is down at #9. Still not bad. We'll see where it ends up for the week. I am liking the PV more and more, myself.

Fall Season -- 19 First Impressions

Of course, it's ridiculous to judge a season after one week. Especially for me, since I usually like almost everything at first. But here are some first impressions.

After the first episode, one show is clearly the best, for me: Blue Drop. It has real characters and emotions and an intriguing story combining girls-school relationships with science fiction. A yuri relationship is apparently to come. The animation and backgrounds are quite rich, the music is good, and the voice-acting is superb, featuring Yajima Akiko (Crayon Shin-chan), Sawashiro Miyuki (Shinku in Rozen Maiden), and Yukino Satsuki (Ai in Planetes). It's the only real drama this season, besides shounen adventure shows like Gundam00 and Dragonauts.

Tthere are a number of shows based on bishoujo games. Clannad is the one that impressed me most, if only for its detailed KyoAni animation and the wonderful seiyuus (Nakahara Mai, Kuwashima Houko and Okiayu Ryoutarou were the most impressive in episode one). The story and relationships are building, too.

ef-a tale of memories was also delightful. The music by TenMon, who does music for Shinkai Makoto (Byousoku 5cm), is sublime. The Shinbou-inspired animation/backgrounds are very artistic. I love them, but some people find the complexity and whimsy distracting. The show is giving us a twist on the normal harem plot by following the stories of three couples rather than one. It may have a bit of Kanon/DaCapo magic.

D.C. Da Capo II is the closest to a standard harem show, but seems to be maintaining the quality of its predecessor. The story takes an unusual turn right in the first episode, with a nicely orchestrated confession.

Kimi Kiss ~pure rouge~ is the least like a standard harem show, at least on the surface. Episode one was a little pale, but that stands to reason from the director of Honey & Clover. Hopefully it just means this will be a mature and well-modulated version of the genre. The seiyuu cast is incredible: Koshimizu Ami, Tanaka Rie, Mizuhashi Kaori, Kawasumi Ayako, Ikezawa Haruna, et al.

Myself;Yourself is another show with a standard harem feel: the protagonist comes back to the town he lived in five years before and meets the girls and boys he knew then, who have all grown up into senior high students like him. But there are interesting relationships in the offing, especially with the beautiful tsundere miko and the lovable dojikko meganekko.

Goshuushou-sama Ninomiya-kun is pure sex farce, like a version of Girls Bravo. But it is based on a novel that won a fantasy novel award, so I expect there will be more to it as we go on. It seemed to me quite well done, with a protagonist and leading lady it is possible to feel sympathy for -- even though he is indifferent to women and she is a succubus. The absurd comedy is funny. And there is lots of moe and fanservice.

We also have three slice of life-type shows. Sketchbook ~full color's~ is from a comic strip centred on a shy girl who relates to the world by constantly sketching it. Her confusions, and her friends, make her a wonderful figure. And so does her VA, the superlatively moe young actress Hanazawa Kana.

Mokke is from another manga, about two sisters living in the countryside. The younger one (Mizuki Nana) is adventurous and vulnerable to spirits. The elder (Kawasumi Ayako) is her responsible protector, who has the ability to ward off the spirits. I was less thrilled than I expected to be, but I will be back for ep2.

Minami-ke is the story of three sisters, each with their different character: onee-san (Satou Rina), crazy middle one (Inoue Marina), clever and quiet younger one (Chihara Minori). I found it a bit disappointing, myself, a very pale imitation of Ichigo Mashimaro. But it does have promise, especially with the good VAs. Inoue-san is especially good, but her character sounds too much like an attempt to copy Miu from IchiMash for my taste.

There are a couple of shounen SF adventure shows, but neither of them cured me of my indifference to the genre. Gundam00 involves a secret force of especially powerful Gundams that intends to stop the wars plaguing the world by defeating all the combatants: to stop violence by violence. This interesting premise gives me some hope, but I still can't really get into the thrill of battle. The cast is good, featuring Miyano Mamoru, Miki Shinichirou, and Kamiya Hiroshi.

Dragonaut ~The Resonance~ features an all-star cast of seiyuu most of whom have worked more in bishoujo anime than in shounen: Ono Daisuke, Chihara Minori, Suwabe Junichirou, Sawashiro Miyuki, Gotou Yuuko, Mizuki Nana, Sugita Tomokazu, Chiba Saeko, Kobayashi Yu, Hirano Aya. Aya totally floored me with a good performance as the evil, big-boobed antagonist. But my interest in this concerns only the seiyuu and the potential romance. Even when there was something that should have packed an emotional wallop, the show seemed to suck the life out of any emotion, for me.

Shakugan no Shana II seems to have a slightly more mature character design than the original, but the stories look as if they will be just as boring. I do care about the romance aspects, but I can't wade through all the monster garbage to get to them. Nevertheless, people who liked the first series should like this one, too. Mine is a minority opinion.

One shounen comedy show, Bamboo Blade, is a school sports comedy that features a nice, clean drawing style and that I enjoyed far more than I expected to. Perhaps You're Under Arrest: Full Throttle falls into this category, too. The story is extremely simple, even iconic, but it is executed well and I enjoyed this show far more than I expected to, as well. Settle in for a glimpse of the 80s.

Rental Magica is a comedy with a set-up something like Ghost Hunt: a company that rents out sorcerers of various kinds. I enjoyed it more than I expected to, as well. It seemed a simple show, but the characters and voice actors were good: Fukuyama Jun in soft mode, Ueda Kana, Takahashi Mikako, Itou Shizuka, Suwabe Junichirou.

Shugo Chara is pure shoujo comedy/adventure aimed at early teens. The protagonist is a shy and needy girl who puts on a cool, tough front. One day she finds three eggs in her bed which hatch into guardian characters that help her transform into a magical girl. There are other good and bad young wizards whose world she now becomes part of. All that having been said, the characterization and the voice-acting are excellent. Based on one episode, this show could be a lot of fun.

And then there are a couple of shows that just don't fit any category, except perhaps that they are hoping for a female audience. Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro is a comic supernatural adventure featuring a normal girl and a demon detective who loves to eat mysteries and forces her to help him, so that she has become a famous detective simply by accompanying him. I enjoyed episode one, especially since Neuro is played by the great Koyasu Takehito, and the girl by Ueda Kana.

And Kaiji follows a lazy thief and gambler who is caught by guaranteeing a friend's gambling debt and consigned to a ship on which other similar unfortunates have to compete in a gambling game to pay off their debts. A strange, hard-edged drawing style works well here. As long as we can sympathize with the unlikeable protagonist, this show could be a trip.

As usual, I enjoy a lot of the new shows. But the only one to really stand out for me is Blue Drop: a yuri school drama with a science fiction background, directed by a man whose other show was Yukikaze, which was pure psychological science fiction, and featuring some seiyuu that are real actors.

There are some shows I haven't seen yet: the interesting-looking Hero Tales, and Kawaii Jenny, which animates actual dolls. And the highly promising Shion no Ou, Genshiken and Ghost Hound are yet to come, as is Moyashimon, which has a very weird premise, involving bacteria with personalities, I believe.

Patty and Misao at Oktoberfest

Lucky Star seiyuus Sasaki Nozomi (Patty, left) and Mizuhara Kaoru (Misao) had a good time drinking dark German beer at Oktoberfest (Tokyo version) on Saturday.

In Sasaki-san's blog, she says they became friends working on Lucky Star and went on a "date" Saturday. This is a normal way of referring to a girls' outing. Nozomi says she gets drunk after one glass of beer, but that Kaoru is a "sieve," meaning she can drink and drink and it doesn't affect her.

I can't help thinking: "drunken miko." Sasaki-san has worked as a Shinto shrine priestess (miko), and lists her special skills as "drawing, Kansai-ben (Osaka accent), and sacred dances."

2channel has recently discovered Sasaki-san's very active blog and her charming looks and writing, and her first thread on 2channel is beginning to be more active.

As one poster said, her blog "is worth reading." She's a college graduate with a gentle wit and a sharp eye. Other posters have taken to wishing her good morning or good night. They refer to her as Nozomin, often with a musical note added: のぞみん♪ One poster expressed surprise that she liked to drink so much. This is not the first time she has shown herself with a drink in her hand.

Nozomin and Mizuhara Kaoru have two of the three most distinctive voices in Lucky Star. Here's hoping that beer is good for the voice. Nozomin ended one post: "I love Germany."

Lyrics by Seiyuu Morinaga Rika

On her blog today, tiny rocker-seiyuu Morinaga Rika 森永理科 posted some song lyrics she's working on. I liked them, and thought I'd make a stab at a translation.

Rika has been talking for months about the new single from her group function code(). It was just released a week ago. She says today that there are now ads all around the country and it may end up in the top twenty for the month. She says she has lots of work, both in anime and in music, and everyone is happy.

Rika was Ren in Kaze no Stigma, Mamiina in Simoun, and Souseiseki in Rozen Maiden, and will be Mako-chan in Minami-ke. She has her own style, a sort of goth-rock subculture style that makes a nice contrast with her 4'10", 82lb. frame. The Japanese lyrics are on her blog. You can hear some of her group's other music on their MySpace page.

Here are the lyrics:

transience
purity
beauty
preciousness
modestness
brutality
a girl
facing despair
hope
love
a swaying melody
my melody
a lovely name: "my melody"
alone
with an impulse to live
in elementary school, the word "egocentric" was going around
in elementary school, the words "that's just what she's like" were going around
in elementary school, the word "pull" was going around
in elementary school, the word "snake" was going around
destiny
injured children
those who believe in misfortune
uprightness
bushido
heart gone to an unknown destination
distrust
laziness
destructive behavior
terror
group-think
warmth
hospital
miracle
parents
curiosity
ascension
do you have a dream?
deficiency of spiritual immunity
people's daily degeneration.
uuuumu...

NOTE: I'm not certain of the translation of the word I have made "snake." The word habu, in katakana, can refer to a certain poisonous snake, or to the English word "hub." I wonder if it can mean "have," as well.

Blue Drop -- Off To a Great Start

Blue Drop is the show that I had the most hopes -- and fears -- for in the fall season. The first episode has fulfilled all my hopes. Now we'll see if it can maintain the high standard.

This is a drama with yuri undertones that combines school life and science fiction. In the first episode, the drama works, the animation works, the music works, and the voice-acting is outstanding. Real acting by experienced professionals such as Yajima Akiko (Crayon Shin-chan), Sawashiro Miyuki (Shinku in Rozen Maiden), Yukino Satsuki (Ai in Planetes), Nakata Jouji (Alucard in Hellsing), and others. I have made a characters/seiyuus page that gives pictures and descriptions of the main characters and their VAs.

The story is set in a world created by mangaka Yoshitomi Akihito (Eat-Man, Ray). The overall situation is an incipient invasion of Earth by a race of humanoid aliens, all of whom are female. The Blue Drop mangas are generally shounen/seinen comics involving yuri and gender-switching sex, and plenty of nudity, set on an Earth ruled by libidinous female aliens. The anime seems to be rather different, somewhat more serious, and it is set (so far) before the invasion has really begun.

The protagonist, Mari, was the only survivor of a disastrous incident five years before on a small Japanese island. In the "incident" -- which was actually a battle with the aliens -- she lost her parents, and she lost her memory. She was taken in by her wealthy grandmother, who was concerned for her and decided to have her tutored at home. Now, five years later, she realizes that Mari must learn how to get along with other people, and sends her to a private residential girls' school.

The story begins as Mari is being driven to her new school. She feels -- quite wrongly -- that her grandmother is just getting rid of her. She does not want to go. As they approach the town where the school is, she sees a girl standing on a rock by the sea, surrounded by wheeling flights of terns. The dramatic and graceful image is seared into her brain. At the school, she is rather sullen with the head teacher, but the headmaster treats her well, aware that she is only just now beginning to attend school.

Mari tries to get rid of the humble girl, Michiko, who is told to guide her to her room in the residence. But Michiko follows her and the ice is broken between them. Hagino, the queen of the school, comes to see her in her room. Hagino is a cool beauty who is an outstanding student, a top athlete, and a kind person. They greet each other warmly: Hagino was the girl by the shore, surrounded by seabirds. But suddenly Hagino seems to snap: her eyes turn to blue mirrors and she begins to strangle Mari on her bed. When Mari begins to scream, she comes out of it. Mari angrily tosses a pot of flowers at her, asks her what on Earth she was doing, and storms out.

Michiko eventually finds Mari by a lake on the school campus. Michiko tells her about her comparatively ordinary family, in contrast with the wealthy families of most of the girls at the school. You can see a friendship beginning as they walk back to the dorm. At dinner, Mari is introduced to everyone. Hagino comes up to shake hands with her, but Mari slaps her hand away angrily and throws a glass of water over her. A brawl breaks out, as Hagino's supporters swarm Mari. Mari breaks free, but a senior stops the fight and sends them all to their rooms.

That night, Mari hears something outside and sees Hagino sneaking away from the school. She follows her down to a foggy dock area. Mari watches Hagino stand by the shore, and is shocked when a monstrous vehicle with banks of flashing blue lights suddenly rises out of the water in front of Hagino. Hagino turns, and we can see that her eyes have again turned to blue mirrors. End of episode.

Director Ohkura Masahiko did the five-episode OVA Battle Fairy Yukikaze in 2002. It was the strong and psychological story of a pilot and his AI-controlled fighter aircraft, in battles with an invading alien force. The lead writer is Takahashi Natsuko. She has worked on many shows, including FMA, Marimite, Bleach, Gankutsuou, School Rumble, Jigoku Shoujo, etc., and was lead writer on Gakuen Heaven. She was actually producer of Aishiteruze Baby. The script itself is credited to the director and the mangaka.

It's not often we get a first episode with real characters, exquisite voice-acting, and nothing childish. Maybe they can keep this up. And there are only a few shows that I immediately watch again as soon as I have seen them once. For me, that category includes Simoun, Suzumiya Haruhi, Bokura ga Ita, Lucky Star, Touka Gettan -- and now Blue Drop.

I won't have time to blog any show this season, but I just wanted to alert people to the possibility that this might be a worthwhile show. The Simoun-Fans group is subbing it.

To be precise, the name of this series is Blue Drop -- Tenshitachi no Gikyoku (BLUE DROP ~天使達の戯曲~), which means "Blue Drop -- The Angels' Play" ("play" as in dramatic performance).

The show is animated by Ashi and BeSTACK, with 3DCG by Gonzo. Cast members yet to appear include Gotou Yuuko, Kawakami Tomoko, and Nabatame Hitomi, all as alien officers. Nonaka Ai plays a student.
