2channel Still Crazy -- 30 Hirano Aya Threads in the top 60

I guess 2channel being crazy isn't news, but I've never seen anything like this: of the top 60 most recently active threads in the 2channel seiyuus forum, 30 are about Hirano Aya. Normally, each seiyuu has only one discussion thread.

And here I thought the madness was dying down. What makes it even stranger is that many of the threads seem to be pro-Aya. This doesn't mean she's the 2channelers' favorite -- or least favorite -- seiyuu, just that a lot of people are fascinated by her.

I don't mean to malign 2channelers in general. Most posts in most threads are sensible posts by knowledgeable otaku. Aya just seems to attract the crazies on both sides. Some posts are just swear words, and one guy posts "good night" to her every night. I've been reading the Sawashiro Miyuki thread recently, and it is a lot tamer. And less popular.

Some thread names with (thread count) and post count:
  • Hirano Aya antis = disgusting otaku lolicon virgins (1) 46
  • Is Hirano Aya really the best seiyuu for Haruhi? (1) 97
  • Hirano Aya has no boyfriend -- for sure (1) 102
  • Stop posting Hirano Aya threads in the baseball forum, Aya maniacs (1) 28
  • Is it true that Hirano Aya lies in her blog? (1) 161
  • Because there are too many anti-Hirano people, I have become her fan (1) 61
  • Strange ways of extending anti-Hirano threads (1) 27
  • Watching the Olympics with Hirano Aya-chan (1) 22
  • Tyranno-Aya (1) 154
  • Hirano antis are shitty pigs, for real, lol (1) 26
  • Aaya Onee-san (1) 16
  • I think Hirano Aya's live event was great (1) 96
  • Hirano Aya (20) has such small breasts that she shouldn't wear a bikini (1) 279
  • Thread for Hirano Aya fans and undecideds (antis and Aya maniacs not allowed) (1) 97
  • If Hirano Aya works at it, she could have sex (1) 112
  • Hirano Aya>>>>>>>Tamura Yukari>>>Mizuki Nana (1) 225

  • The number of people who just can't stop themselves from loving Hirano Aya is... (1) 20
  • Hirano Aya (145) 163 (the main thread, which is usually the only one)
  • Hirano Aya is a latter-day Matsuda Seiko (1) 71
  • Hirano Aya antis = virgin lolicon disgusting otaku idiots (1) 173
  • The deterioration of Hirano Aya (1) 89
  • Hirano Aya antis are just jealous (1) 179
  • Hirano Aya isn't a virgin (1) 201
  • Hirano Aya-san in a ren-ai game! (1) 93
  • Mizuki Nana completely loses to Hirano Aya (1) 613
  • Hirano Aya (125) 281 (an old orphaned thread that someone started using)
I think "Tyranno-Aya" is the most amusing thread title. I haven't sampled all these threads, but the ones you would expect to be stupid seem to be...stupid. If you can picture pro- and anti-Hirano forces posting mutual insults and unsupported claims, you get the picture.

Speaking of pictures, here are some recent ones of Aya -- from her blog (click to enlarge):

1. at Ani-Summer live, waiting for the lift to take her up to the stage. The lift failed during rehearsal...but succeeded when it counted. She did two songs: Love Gun and Unnamed World.

2. At Animelo, after her set, with her band; "having worked so hard I look like an idiot;" and with May'N (who sings Sheryl's songs in Macross Frontier):

3. Snacking when there's no time for a meal (on a mugwort ohagi); with a gift from the mangaka of Zettai Karen Children; and on her way to the supermarket late at night:

4. The entire contents of Aya's bag, including the contents of her purse, and her scripts (click to enlarge):

With Zettai Karen Children, Nijuumensou no Musume, and Macross Frontier ending soon, Aya will be in three new shows starting in October. She is one of the four stars of the absurd comedy Hyakko (with Orikasa Fumiko, Neya Michiko, and Ochiai Yurika). She is a secondary character in the star-studded mecha show Linebarrels of Iron. And she and Kugimiya Rie star in the school romance Akane-Iro ni Somaru Saka.

conjecture:
1. fans who likes aaya continues to like her.
2. fans who hates her gets tired, eventually grows apathetic to fans who likes her and it reaches an equilibrium.
3. some people just want to get a reaction.

Last I heard, Zettai Karen Children will have 52 episodes. So, there's actually more to go and not "ending soon". ^_^

I guess her popularity arises somewhat from the versatility that she demonstrates in her roles.

To be honest, I still can't believe and imagine she's Konata's seiyuu.

@peanutbutter -- Thanks for the info. I'm amazed -- but I guess I shouldn't be, since this show replaced Hayate in its time-slot. I gave it up after about six episodes. I guess I should go back and take a look. And a listen.

By the way, I see that we're back to less than a half-dozen Aya threads in the top 60, so I guess that was a bit of a false alarm -- just a couple of people going crazy, lol.

"Stop posting Hirano Aya threads in the baseball forum, Aya maniacs"

LOL. I've always liked Aya-I even waited for 2 hours at AX. I still like Aya now, I just like Nana better XD.

Though speaking about Nana, it seems like she's getting the most flak now judging from the post count on your list of threads. I don't go to 2chan (my Japanese is fail) but are otaku like rallying against her because she's becoming too mainstream? I remember seeing a poll on Oricon and she's #8. Behind Ayu, Hikki, ayaka, Namie, Kuu, and Ai Otsuka on the "Best Female Singer" poll. Anyways sorry for babbling but I'm just curious about 2chan -_____-

@kiseki_gurl -- It does seem as if the number of posts in the main Nana thread on 2channel has dropped off significantly. Aya burns through 1000 posts every 2-3 weeks, whereas the main Nana thread only has around 100 posts in three months. But Nana's thread count is 251 (i.e., 250,000 posts), whereas Aya's is 145, so Nana has a big head start.

There are several anti-Nana threads. She seems to be the second-most opposed seiyuu, after Aya. Maybe it comes with fame, or with being famous for something other than seiyuu work, I don't know. I haven't read every thread, but I don't really see a consistent basis of opposition. A previous anti- thread just criticized her appearance. I also have seen a post suggesting she's looking older.

One thing holding down the number of posts in Nana's main thread may be that this time it is called "Mizuki Nana, whom Sakurai loves," alluding to rumours of her and Sakurai Takahiro being an item. Any love relationsip seems to be poson for an idol in Japan. Photo:

I now see that it's all based on their having the same ring:

So maybe.

I don't think eighth among all singers in the past 20 years is so bad for a seiyuu.

^ Interesting. Thanks for the info. And 2chan is still talking about that whole matching rings deal -___-?

And I'm still shocked that Nana was able to make it onto that list. All those other artists are on top right now (Namie's BEST has sold over a million copies) and it's great to see that the guys put Nana at their level. It's really incredible.

Though I can't help thinking that Aya has a long way to go if she ever wants to beat Nana....Hopefully Aya just ignores 2chan and continues on. After all, haters are an indicator of success.

@kiseki_gurl -- I'm a big fan of Aya's, and I even like her music, but it's certain that Nana-chan is a more skilful singer. I don't happen to like Nana-chan's musical style much, myself, but I think it will continue to be popular in Japan.

I can't imagine Aya rising anywhere near that high in popularity as a singer, even though I myself enjoy her style more. I think Aya's aiming to be a TV personality and all-around idol/entertainer, as well as a seiyuu. We'll see how it goes.

I think what you say is true for both of them: haters are an indication of success.

i like her singing very much in fact.. not all songs.. but most of them..
i like her voicing act.. and pretty much looking forward to hyakko, akane and linebarrels this fall too..
