Kugimiya Rie to be Interviewed on NHK Anime Giga

The guest on the May edition of the NHK anime interview show Anime Giga will be Kugimiya Rie. The broadcast will be on May 14.

The show, which is broadcast approximately monthly, involves background features and a major interview with its guests, which have included Kon Satoshi, Yamadera Kouichi, Hirano Aya, Paku Romi, and Fukuyama Jun.

The show's main interviewer is Watanabe Takashi, director of Slayers and Shakugan no Shana, former editor of New Type magazine, and one of the producers of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. The Hirano interview is probably the best interview of her I've seen.

I found all or part of the Hirano and Fukuyama interviews on YouTube and Nico Nico Douga, so hopefully KugiRie's will show up, too. (I searched for Anime Giga in Japanese : アニメギガ).

Here is the main Anime Giga page, and here is a page giving background about KugiRie. The background info says that she has "an unforgettably distinctive youthful voice," and "a very broad range of expression," and mentions her winning an award for best supporting role in the Seiyuu Awards for 2007.

And if you think I wrote this mainly for Kaioshin_sama, well, maybe you're right.

My Favorites of the New Season -- Twenty-Faces, Kurenai, Macross and More

Okay, we're three episodes into the spring anime season and I have to declare myself. At least I have to stop watching some shows so anime doesn't take all my time.

My favorites? Nijuumensou no Musume, Kurenai, and Macross Frontier. None of these are reaching the level of True Tears, Ef, or Blue Drop for me, but they have a chance.

I find myself especially eager to see each episode of Nijuumensou no Musume, and not just for Hirano Aya at her best. The pacing is perfect so far, never so fast that it loses emotional sense, nor so slow that I start looking at the slider. All the characters seem to have something inside them: they are people, not just images of people.

I like the way secrets are revealed gradually, but without making a fetish of them. There is always something more to be revealed. And quick moments tell a lot, such as the <2 seconds in episode 4 when you saw the two bad guys glance at each other and Nijuumensou and Chiko both realize something was amiss. And Nijuumensou himself -- "Twenty-Faces" -- is as beautifully voiced by Uchida Yuya as his "daughter" Chiko is by Hirano Aya.

The animation here is actually stellar, although at first it looks quite plain. Chiko's movements in episode 4 when she is cleaning the floor and a window are really something, as is the way her body sways as she gets up onto the seawall carrying a heavy basket. A poster on 2channel said that it looks like a rerun of an old show, and it does. But someone else pointed out that it uses modern techniques to give it this retro feel. Retro plus.

The two groups subbing this in English give it two different names: Live-Evil calls it The Daughter of Twenty-Faces, which is a translation of the Japanese title. Sudo calls it Chiko, Heiress of the Phantom Thief, as Anime News Network does.

Kurenai captivated me from the start. A seven-year-old girl who has been a virtual prisoner in her aristocratic family's home is rescued by her minder and hidden in the apartment of a young bodyguard called Kurenai, who has a killing blade implanted in his arm. The bold tsundere character of the little girl and the walk-on-eggs caution of her new roommate continue to make for a fascinating relationship.

Once again, the direction and the portrayal of character and relationship are what make this show tick. And the voice-acting is continually excellent, especially that of Sawashiro Miyuki as the 16-year-old bodyguard and that of former child actress Yuuki Aoi -- who is actually 16 -- as the little girl.

The show is directed by the director of Red Garden, and appears to use the same unusual technique of recording the voices before finalizing the animation. This allows for some very natural conversations, with voices running parallel or interrupting each other. Great effect.

I had never seen any Macross show, and I went into Macross Frontier thinking it would be mainly mecha. Instead of that, I get some interesting characters and even romantic relationships, as well as space battles and friendly and unfriendly aliens.

I am a total sucker for the shoujo staple of the apparently incompetent girl who will show her strengths as we go on. And newcomer Nakajima Megumi as Ranka's VA intensifies the effect. Endou Aya (Miyuki in Lucky Star, Angie in Neo-Angelique) is suddenly blossoming this year and makes the big singing star Sheryl into another fascinating character.

You can add Nakamura Yuuichi's Alto to the list of good performances in this show. Alto was trained to play women's roles in kabuki, and is still called "Princess" by his friends. But his ambition is to be a fighter pilot, defending the Macross space colony. So we get complexities of romance, relationship, and gender. And a huge colony-city in space, making its way from Earth toward the centre of the galaxy.

I am also enjoying Vampire Knight, which is a top-notch vampire show, in the league of Tsukihime and Tsukuyomi, and maybe even approaching Hitsuji no Uta, but with a shoujo tinge. It's wonderful to hear Horie Yui playing the young girl protagonist. But equally good to hear Miyano Mamoru as her (unrelated) elder brother and Kishio Daisuke as the aristocratic vampire who once saved her from another vampire.

The animation here is not as detailed as in the first three shows, but it is very stylish. And I find the angst of the story quite persuasive. Hocchan's Yuki is strong, good, daring, and an attractive personality all round. Mamo-chan's Zero is a young vampire hunter with a secret.

Kyouran Kazoku Nikki is my surprise hit. Its combination of madcap humor and sweet relationships is entrancing. And there is some great character-creating voice-acting by Fujimura Ayumi and Hirohashi Ryou, among others.

My guilty pleasure is Kanokon, which may be the most outrageously sexual fanservice show I have ever seen. Even people who like fanservice are saying it goes too far. And Kawasumi Ayako shows yet another side of her multifaceted talent. The other main fanservice show of the seaon, ToLoveRu, doesn't interest me as much, but the wonderful Yahagi Sayuri is at her best as the hero's real love-interest, Haruna.

I expected Neo-Angelique Abyss to be another guilty pleasure, but it is in fact more than that. The new staff (largely from Corda D'Oro) that is producing this iteration of Angelique is giving it better animation, better dialogue, and a plot that is working so far, despite the monsters. Endou Aya is making this her big season, with another sharp performance as the sweet girl who is the strongest mage around, and ends every battle emitting powerful light that flushes away the monsters. And the character design is terrific, including Angie's outfits and zettai ryouiki, and her bevy of real bishounen. Like Vampire Knight, this show gets its bishounen fanservice right, perhaps because the main staff people in both cases are women.

Many people would consider any Da Capo show to be a guilty pleasure, but I don't. This second season of Da Capo 2 is starting off much better than season one, with romantic complexity and glimpses into the feelings of the participants. And Yoshiyuki's denseness has not yet gotten out of hand. Add Takagaki Ayahi (Noe in True Tears) as Otome, and you really have something.

Real Drive is yet another Production IG/Shirow Masamune tale that I can't help enjoying even when I don't understand what is going on. Production IG's surrender to the commercial usefulness of fanservice has produced some interesting panty shots of the unusually plump heroine. Great animation and character design, as usual.

Naisho no Tsubomi has captured my attention, too. It is based on a health education manga for girls, but has been made into an enjoyable slice-of-life anime. The first episode showed the travails of our young heroine as she had her first period, completely unaware of what was going on. The relationships with friends and family are beautiful, and so is the voice-acting, especially by Nazuka Kaori and Koshimizu Ami as the two main girls. Even if this show weren't such good slice-of-life, I might be watching it just for the beauty of those two voices.

Allison and Lillia started well, but has become less interesting for me as it goes on. It is seeming too far-fetched and rushes through things that should take longer. We'll see how ep5 shapes up. The character and relationship of the protagonists are what count.

Library Wars seemed to have some of the relationship goodness of Planetes at first, and may still, but ep3 was a bit meh for me -- except for the cliffhanger ending.

My enjoyment of Itazura na Kiss waxes and wanes. Not a great show, but a great story -- which is the reason why it has come to anime after having already been a manga and two dramas. Maybe the fact that I saw one of the dramas makes this less interesting to me.

Net Ghost PiPoPa is another surprise hit for me. It and the new season of Blue Dragon appear to be the most-watched new shows on Japanese TV. The clean look and good adventure story for young kids both remind me of Otogijushi Akazukin. Not something I'll watch every week, but enjoyable for what it is.

There are lots of other good shows this spring. Almost everything is watchable. Soul Eater is visually wonderful, but the surface brilliance and humor aren't enough for me -- especially since monsters generally turn me off. I've never been a fan of Code Geass, despite its great cast. And Zettai Karen Children is just finding its feet. More of the emotion behind the characters and less of the stereotypical battles might please me.

Wagaya no Oinari-sama has two good things going for it: the characters played by Yukana and Hayami Saori (Momoka in Touka Gettan). Yukana is the female aspect of the fox god who is brought in to protect the household. Hayamin is the clumsy but powerful young priestess who is there to help her and keep her under control. Hayamin, at 16, is growing fast as a seiyuu. Her singing of the ED is already top professional quality. But the story and writing are limping.

Golgo 13 has real masculinity: a square-built sniper hero who shows zero emotion as he takes out the bad guys in a show whose dark colors and deliberate direction make it feel classic. Mnemosyne continues to combine atrocious violence with yuri in an over-rich but tasty soup. And Noto Mamiko and Kugimiya Rie sound great.

Crystal Blaze, Himitsu: Top Secret, Monochrome, and Tower of Druaga all have strengths, too. Despite the fact I haven't had time to watch more than one episode, I suspect that Amatsuki could develop into something, as well. And Junjo Romantika is true yaoi, with strong fanservice and relationships. Kyou Kara Maou and Nabari no Ou just didn't do it for me after one episode, so I haven't had a chance to watch more.

This season may not have the overwhelming excellence at the top that some other seasons had, but it is deeper in good shows than any season I can recall.

New Season Popularity in Japan -- 2channel vs. TV Ratings

Macross FMacross Frontier and probably Code Geass top the list of most posted-about new shows on 2channel. Macross is at almost 87,000 posts. The most popular new shows in TV ratings, however, are Blue Dragon 2 and Net Ghost PiPoPa. I'll get to TV ratings later in the article.

Unfortunately, it's hard to know the 2channel popularity of Code Geass, since the threads have just continued on from the first series. It is now up to 578,000 posts, overall.

Coming after Macross's 87 threads (86,000+ posts), way down at 20 threads, is Zettai Karen Children, which apparently took over Hayate no Gotoku's popularity when it took over its TV timeslot.

Zettai Karen ChildrenKurenai, Soul Eater, and Library Wars follow, at 13 threads each. ToLoveRu has 12.

Kamen no Maid Guy is at 8, and Blassreiter and Kanokon are at 7 each. Kyouran Kazoku Nikki has 6, and Nabari no Ou and Wagaya no Oinarisama both have 5.

Allison to Lillia and Vampire Knight are at 4, and there is a long list at 3: Golgo 13, Itazura na Kiss, Mnemosyne, Neo-Angelique Abyss, Nijuumensou no Musume, Penguin Musume, and Special A.

Chi's Sweet Home and Crystal Blaze are at 2, and Bus Gamer at 1.

It's hard for me to tell about XXXHolic 2 and Da Capo 2 SS, since they both may have just continued threads from their first series, as Code Geass seems to have. But I don't have access to the 2channel archives to find out. XXXHolic is at 20 threads and Da Capo 2 SS at 9.

Golgo 13This list simply shows how interesting shows are to people who post on 2channel. It is quite different from general popularity as represented in TV ratings. For those, check out Siegel Clyne's posts in the "Anime TV Ratings in Japan" thread in the AnimeSuki forum.

In TV ratings, family anime like Sazae-san and Chibi Maruko-chan had 18 and 14 percent of the TV audience in their time slots in the week ending April 20. Anime like One Piece, Detective Conan, Gegege no Kitaro, and Naruto were around 6-8 percent.

Then there was a group around 5-6 percent: Major, Precure, Keroro Gunso. And Gintama was just under 5 percent of the audience.

Net Ghost PiPoPaBetween 3 and 4 percent came Blue Dragon, Bleach, Shugo Chara and Net Ghost PiPoPa. As far as I can see, Blue Dragon 2 and PiPoPa were the highest-rated new shows.

Then, just under 3 percent of the audience, we have a batch of new shows: xxxHolic Kei, Toshokan Sensou, Golgo 13, ToLoveRu, and Code Geass.

Between 2 and 2.5 percent were Onegai My Melody Kirara, a rerun of Prince of Tennis, Macross Frontier, Soul Eater, Real Drive, Itazura na Kiss, the late show of Soul Eater, and Zettai Karen Children.

Figures are not available for all shows. And some shows will be missing from the 2channel list, as well, since I only took shows that were among the top 100 recently posted about.

EDIT: Here are a couple of sites that give TV ratings. Video Research is a Nielsen-like company that does a top ten of the week in all genres (anime, dorama, etc.). And this site brings together figures for more than the top ten anime and posts them a few weeks later. Siegel Clyne's posts are the best early word on anime below the top ten. Thanks to bluemist for mentioning Video Research in a comment.

OMG, Hirano Aya Actually Is a Great Seiyuu -- Nijuu-mensou no Musume ep3

I am never really sure of my opinions, and Aya's ability is no exception. Sometimes I think maybe I'm just imagining things, and she's not really that good. But I'm not imagining how great she is in this show.

At best, I have always put her in the second rank of seiyuus, not up with the likes of Paku Romi, Kuwashima Houko, Kobayashi Sanae, Kawasumi Ayako, and Sawashiro Miyuki. But this show is making me change my mind. This role and Layla in NANA are Aya's best, for me.

She's not the most naturalistic of actresses, and can't just be slotted in to any role successfully. But when the voices around her fit the tone she creates, she can really convey character and emotion. By the way, that is not happening in Zettai Karen Children, where the three main seiyuu continue to operate in two different voice universes, and Aya's take on the role isn't working that well, for me.

The 2channel thread for Nijuumensou no Musume particularly praises a moment late in this episode when Nijuumensou calls on Chiko to confirm a trick he has played, and the drawing of her face changes from innocent to sly and she says to the person they have duped: "You should have checked when you had a chance." (click all images to enlarge)

Posters are praising both the drawing and the voicing of that moment. A couple of people wrote that it gave them goosebumps. Another wrote that he didn't realize Hirano was this good. With the music stopping at that point, the scene is clearly set up to give Aya the whole stage, and she makes good use of it.

The show itself goes from strength to strength. This is another highly entertaining episode. Uchida Yuya's voice is a pleasure to listen to, as well. And the drawing of faces is excellent all round. This image (right) of Nijuumensou particularly captivated me. That's a lot of character and energy in one still image.

Aya may have benefited from the popularity of Suzumiya Haruhi and Lucky Star to gain prominence and awards over the past two years, but this show is going to make up for that advantage, being a show in a less popular genre, played very late at night, on a schedule that varies from week to week.

There are howls on 2channel about the scheduling on FujiTV, which will see the next few episodes varying from 3:55am to 3:05 to 3:35 to 2:15 to 4:05 to 2:25. One poster joked about "dawn anime" for the 4:05 broadcast. Even otaku will have trouble programming their recorders to get this show.

It will only reach a somewhat larger audience in the Tokyo area when it starts being broadcast on BS Fuji satellite at 12:30 Sunday night on May 12. Fortunately, the schedule is more regular on Kansai TV, but still late: 2:29 early Wednesday mornings.

As some posters say, so far this anime seems like a World Masterpiece Theatre show, and should be on at 7:30 Sunday evening. WMT is a long-running family anime series that has done such works as Anne of Green Gables and Les Miserables.

I have read ahead in the manga, and there is plenty of material there for the anime staff to work with, including some that would not be suitable for WMT. Fasten your seat-belts. The anime is not exactly following the manga, so I expect some surprises.

The photos of Aya in this post were both taken in the past 2-3 days. The latter two are at karaoke with her family, and show her mother and father in the background. Aya says that her mother hates karaoke, but she came this time. She adds that when the whole family sings in unison, their voices sound the same.

Her father actually wrote a song on the spur of the moment to sing. He is apparently in the entertainment business himself, as a TV producer. She says that she and he look alike and you would know they were parent and child if you saw them walking together.

Other people don't seem to like Aya's singing as much as her family does: unnamed world has dropped out of the top twenty in Saturday's Oricon listings. I'm having my lack of faith in the common judgment confirmed, as this show remains not that popular (just beginning only its fourth thread on 2channel) and Aya's best music is ignored.

Hayami Saori to Appear Live

Brilliant 16-year-old singer/seiyuu Hayami Saori 早見沙織 will be appearing in what I think is her first live event next month in Tokyo. She will sing the Wagaya no Inari-sama ED and there will be a talk portion of the program.

Also appearing will be Hitomisora (Yoshida Hitomi and Izumikawa Sora), who do the OP. The OP single will be released on 14 May and the ED on 28 May.

There is an application form on the official site for people who want to attend the 17 May event. One hundred names will be chosen.

There continues to be a steady trickle of posts in Hayamin's thread on 2channel. And it is on 2channel that they have decided to give her the nickname "Hayamin." People see her as making progress in her voice-acting and as already very accomplished in her singing. Her soft-voiced portrayal of the strange Kou in Wagaya is quite riveting. For me, she and Yukana are the only things of much interest in that show.

She may also be appearing in a new show this summer: Sekirei, an ecchi comedy from the director of Nanoha A's, Nanoha Strikers, and Inukami. The cast has not been announced, but some people (including me) think it's her voice in the promo video, playing Musubi, a miko who seems to drop from the sky onto our hero and move in with him, and whose large breasts are often uncovered in the promo video.

Perhaps I"m Enterprises is rolling out its "secret weapon."

Nijuu-mensou no Musume -- ED PV, 2channel, Hirano Aya

Through two episodes, this show is firing on all cylinders for me. As a poster on the Japanese forum 2channel wrote, it uses modern techniques but gives a retro feel. As another poster wrote, it is refined rather than showy.

As usual, there is a range of opinion on 2channel, but the great majority of posters like the show. The main thing they have against is that it is on TV too late at night (2am or later), when it seems to be a show more suited to daytime broadcast. One poster says that if it keeps on as it is, it will be a classic.

Various people were moved by the two strong quotes from Nijuu-mensou himself, "Twenty-Faces," the phantom thief. The first, that his "daughter" Chiko should "watch, listen and think for herself" to discover what work she should do. Chiko did just that in ep2, as well as thinking what Nijuu-mensou would do in her situation. The second quote, said to the Chinese woman in ep2 (beautifully played by Kigawa Eriko, who was Maeter in Eureka Seven), was to ask if, like him, she had ever decided to devote her life to someone, or ever thought back with shame on her sins.

This appears to be a simple crime adventure, but it is a deeper show than that. And for me, Aya and Uchida Yuya (Nijuu-mensou) give performances that convey appropriate depth of thought and feeling.

Aya's performance comes in for more praise than blame on 2channel, which is unusual there. One poster was surprised that she was "not annoying." Another pointed out that the ubiquitous anti-Aya forces had been toned down by her good performance. Some people think she's wrong for the part, others that she is showing her range. Another said that she seems to be feeling her way into a new area. I agree with that. I look forward to hearing how she conveys Chiko's maturation.

I personally think the OP and ED are among the best this season. The OP by 369 (YouTube) gives me a great feeling combining anticipation and melancholy. Aya's ED simply rocks. One 2channel poster wanted to replace both songs, and I just cannot understand that opinion for the life of me. Chacun à son gout.

Here is the PV of Aya's ED, unnamed world, from YouTube -- complete with looong legs and lollipop (?!). I think it may sell a few CDs. (lyrics here): NOTE: The full PV has been removed from YouTube. Here is the preview version...

The CD was released Tuesday, and came in at #19 on the charts on its first day, lower than I would have thought. But I did not expect it to be very high. This kind of actual rock is not what the otaku audience seems to like, as some 2channel posters pointed out. The excellent B-side, Maybe I Can't Goodbye (YouTube), with Engrish lyrics by Aya herself, is even less to otaku tastes, with its Nirvana-like intro and pace. And Lantis has only just now released the full PV.

And to be honest Aya is still not at the level of many pro singers, either in skill or in fame. Sakamoto Maaya entered the charts on the same day at number six. But this is Aaya's best music to date, in my opinion, and she shows real promise as a rock singer, rather than a ballad singer. I especially like her combination of seiyuu voice dynamics with rock drive. However, I am clearly not in the same mental universe as most fans of anime music, since I still find Mizuki Nana's music skillful but boring. My favorite OP/ED of this season is Hayami Saori's ED ballad for Wagaya no Oinari-sama (YouTube). Hayamin is the Next Big Thing, in my opinion.

I've taken a look at a few chapters of the manga, and for me the anime improves on it in character design and other ways. Here is a comparison of Nijuu-mensou in the two (click to enlarge):

And here is the underground vehicle:

The anime makes small changes in details of the plot that to me make it flow better. For instance, Chiko's trick of using bottles as rollers to move a heavy case is not in the manga, at least at that point, so in the manga the captain changes his mind about her based entirely on her having been poisoned, rather than on a combination of that and her resourcefulness.

Well, it could still all fall apart, but I don't think it will. The quality of direction, art, and acting in the first two episodes suggests to me that they have a good idea what they are doing, and can keep it up.

Nijuu-mensou no Musume -- French Poem from OP

In the OP animation of the so-far excellent new anime Nijuu-mensou no Musume is a poem by Paul Eluard, a French poet of the first half of the 20th century. I think it expresses something of the theme of the show. You can see part of it in the background of the publicity image at right. Here is my attempt at a translation, followed by the original French poem.

Good Justice

The warm law of humans:
From grapes they make wine,
From charcoal they make fire,
From kisses they make humans

The hard law of humans:
To keep themselves safe despite
War and misery,
Despite the danger of death.

The sweet law of humans:
To change water into light,
Dream into reality,
And enemies into brothers.

A law old and new
That continues to perfect itself:
From the bottom of a child's heart
To supreme reason.

BONNE JUSTICE

C'est la chaude loi des hommes
Du raisin ils font du vin
Du charbon ils font du feu
Des baisers ils font des hommes

C'est la dure loi des hommes
Se garder intact malgré
Les guerres et la misère
Malgré les dangers de mort

C'est la douce loi des hommes
De changer l'eau en lumière
Le rêve en réalité
Et les ennemis en frères

Une loi vieille et nouvelle
Qui va se perfectionnant
Du fond du coeur de l'enfant
Jusqu'à la raison suprême.

How Katou Emiri Became a Seiyuu

Katou Emiri was doing design at a Tokyo high school, but was coming to realize that she wasn't as talented as the people around her. Then a classmate suggested she come along to see a seiyuu school: the classmate was Kano Yui (left, with Emirin).

Emirin was asked in an interview if there was any seiyuu she admired as a kid. She said no, that she had no idea of becoming a seiyuu, she just went on the visit to see what being a seiyuu was like, and decided it seemed okay.

Last year, Yui won one of the "best new seiyuu" awards at the Seiyuu Awards, for her comic excesses as Momoko in Sumomo mo Momo mo. This year Emirin did, for her work as Kagami in Lucky Star. What a difference a few years can make.

Yui and Emirin both studied voice work at the Amusement Media Academy. But Yui went on to join the Aoni Pro agency, while Emirin is with 81 Produce. They are both 24, and both did their first anime work in 2004.

Here are some more photos. Left, Emirin (centre) with Fukuhara Kaori (left) and Endou Aya, from Lucky Star. Centre, Kano Yui. Right, Yui and Emirin's high school classmates, at a recent get-together. (Yui couldn't make it because of work.) (click photos to enlarge)

Koshimizu Ami's New Friend

Is called Puuchin (click photos to enlarge):

But she still has old friends like Sanpei Yuuko and Yukana (left) and Kadowaki Maii (right):

And Sanpei-san is a very close friend. Not only did she take the pic of Ami holding Puuchin, but here are some more shots of her from recent entries in Ami's blog. They met in middle school and went all the way through seiyuu school together:

Pe seems to like her games. And Amisuke did a Horo puzzle one night, between 3 and 5 am, with a bottle of wine:

At the moment, Pe is in Yes! Precure 5 GoGo! as Cure Dream, and in My-Otome 0~S.ifr~ as Elliot Chandler. Amisuke is in Code Geass as Kallen, and joins Pe in My-Otome 0~S.ifr~, playing Sifr. Just for good measure, here are a couple of pics of Amisuke from Pe's blog. The left-hand pic is from the same fondu dinner with Yukana as the shot above:

Ami said that "Yuka-nyan" is not only a great cook but also very beautiful.

Macross Frontier -- character/seiyuu pics & info

For those of us who have trouble keeping all this stuff in memory, I've made a page showing the main characters in Macross Frontier, with pics of the character and of their VAs, along with info about each VA. Click here or on the picture to go to the full page.

There is basically just a lot of good voice-acting in this show. Nakamura Yuuichi shows that it is no accident he has become such a hot property. And Nakajima Megumi is making the most of her debut role as Lanka, despite the odd bit of newbie flatness. I also thought her insert song in ep3 was excellent.

But Endou Aya as Sheryl is really blowing me away. Once again, it's no accident that she has three starring roles this spring (in this, Neo-Angelique, and My-Otome s.ifr).

Add names like Kamiya Hiroshi (Zetsubou Sensei), Fukuyama Jun (Lerouch), Kuwashima Houko (Shuurei in Saiunkoku), Kobayashi Sanae (Maya in Glass Mask, one of the greatest performances I've ever seen), Konishi Katsuyuki (Kamina in Gurren-Laggan), and Sugita Tomokazu (Kyon), and you've really got a cast that can do the job.

Vampire Knight -- character/seiyuu pics and info

Vampire Knight is one of the shows I am enjoying this season. But it is a little hard to keep the various members of the "night class" straight. So I have translated the official site's characters page, adding a pic of each seiyuu.

Click here or on the image to go to the full page:

I don't want to put too much emphasis on this, but it struck me as I looked at the official site that all the main creative staff on this show are women. The director is Sayama Kiyoko. This is her first full series, but she did storyboarding and direction for episodes of Princess Tutu, Saber Marionette J, Blood+, Aria the Natural, etc.

The lead writer is Okada Mari, who did work on Simoun, and was lead writer on true tears, Sketchbook, Kodomo no Jikan, etc. The mangaka is Hino Matsuri.

And the character designer is Nishida Asako, who was character designer/animation director on Fate/Stay Night, Simoun, and Touka Gettan. Check out her home page, especially the gallery and her doll collection.

One more staff note: the sound director is Gouda Houzumi, who also is the VA for the headmaster. It seems Studio Deen likes VAs as sound directors: Tsujitani Kouji was sound director of Simoun and F/SN (he was Tanda in Seirei no Moribito).

紅 kure-nai -- characters and seiyuus

Kure-nai is my favorite of the new shows, after two episodes. Drama, character, action, comedy, mystery, good animation, good music, and a cute seven-year old rich girl whose bitchiness is mitigated by her intelligence and basic goodness.

Sawashiro Miyuki is her usual excellent self, but the real surprise is 16-year-old Yuuki Aoi, who is giving us a real seven-year-old and some dramatic power. Relative unknown Kimura Haruka, who has really only done bit parts until now, has impressed me with her portrayal of the rather creepy neighbor Yamie. And Sanada Asami, who was Di Gi Charat to Sawashiro's Petit Charat, is reunited with her here.

To keep the excellent voice-actors straight, I have made a page with pics of each main character and their VA, also giving a bit of info about the VA. Click here or on the image below to go to the full page:

Spring Anime -- 10 More First Looks

So far, Kurenai is the only show that I think might equal my top shows of the past year (true tears, ef, Blue Drop, Hitohira, Lucky Star), but this is a very broad season, with many good shows, several of which could develop into something great. I covered 24 shows in a previous post. Here are ten more that have debuted since then.

Nijuu-mensou no Musume -- Hirano Aya is at her best, acting and singing the ED in this promising retro anime telling the story of a girl who willingly joins a famous thief, in order to get away from the hell she is enduring with her step-parents. Full review.

Real Drive -- Strong Production IG animation and a complex and interesting Shirow Masamune (Ghost in the Shell) plot make this a promising show. Directed by Furuhashi Kazuhiro (Chevalier D'Eon). The cast includes Fujiwara Keiji and Kawasumi Ayako. The character design features strikingly large-hipped women, and we see the same man at 25 and at 80. The look has great clarity and the plot doesn't.

Toshokan Sensou -- More wonderful animation from Production IG in a promising story of a girl joining the para-military organization that defends freedom of publication from an opposing pro-censorship organization. The strong outlines used in some of the character design are fascinating. Echoes of Planetes in the relationship between the leads. Inoue Marina (Yoko in Gurren-Laggan) shows why she got 20 roles last year.

Net Ghost Pipopa -- Kimura Shinichirou (Karin, Mahoraba) directs this surprisingly entertaining kids' show about a boy who fears the Internet and three "Net ghosts" who become his companions. Fine cast includes Satou Rina (Negi Springfield), Shiraishi Ryouko (Hayate), Arai Satomi (Kozue in Mahoraba), and Yahagi Sayuri (Karin). oHagi (Yahagi's nickname) is one of my favorites, and shows her stuff in ep1. What a voice.

Golgo 13 -- Could have been made in 1985. Static animation well used to tell the story of a sniper hired to shoot a hijacker. Brutality, blood, and expressionless super-male faces -- but I enjoyed it.

Junjo Romantika -- Want yaoi? You got it. The dominant male forces the brother of the man he loves to accept being mastur*ated. And that's in the first five minutes. Later, they both regret the brother's becoming engaged. Yes, there is a story in there somewhere. Directed by Kon Chiaki (Higurashi), with a great cast including Sakurai Takahiro, Canna Nobutoshi, Itou Kentarou, Kishio Daisuke, and others.

Kyouran Kazoku Nikki -- Madly funny story of a guy who is dragooned into being the "dad" of a "family" made up of dangerous alien descendants who need to be socialized to humans in order to stop them destroying the world. Top cast includes Fujimura Ayumi, Kondou Takayuki, Hirohashi Ryou, Tomatsu Haruka, Hanazawa Kana, Satou Rina. Fujimura-san shows why she is becoming a favorite of directors. Hanazawa-san has one of the two or three most moe voices in anime (she and Sasaki Nozomi are at the top of my list).

Kaiba -- Wonderful, surreal animation from Yuasa Masaaki and Madhouse. Here's a selection of words from posts on AnimeSuki: existentialist, Dali-esque, theatre of the absurd, stream of consciousness. The words all attracted me, but I ended up bored when I actually watched the show. Too much for me, but if your taste is good enough, you may be as thrilled as some other people are.

Uchi no San Shimai -- Slipping in under the radar is this animated version of a popular blog on child-rearing, showing the amusing parental travails of a family with three girls under about eight. I'll need a sub to really understand the dialogue, and I can't even find a Chinese sub yet. Simple animation, but cute and interesting. Daddy is played by Tsujitani Kouji, who was sound director of Simoun and Fate/Stay Night.

Himitsu - Top Secret -- A secret technology allows police to read the minds of murder victims and find the killer. With Seki Tomokazu, Namikawa Daisuke, and Nonaka Ai. This would be a show to watch, if there weren't so many other good shows already.

Nijuu-mensou no Musume -- Another Spring Favorite

Nijuu-mensou no Musume 二十面相の娘 -- also known as Chiko, Heiress of the Phantom Thief -- debuted Saturday, starring Hirano Aya. I liked Nijuu-mensou enough that it is now one of my five early-season favorites: Kurenai, Macross Frontier, Vampire Knight, Allison & Lillia, and Nijuu-mensou no Musume. There's still nothing in the class of True Tears, Blue Drop, or ef, for me, but time will tell. Kurenai is the show I like most so far. (click images to enlarge)

Nijuu-mensou has a retro feel. Director Tomizawa Nobuo directed a Lupin III movie, and it shows. But from the first episode, the story seems to me to have some depth. It is full of powerful myths: Robin Hood; Superman; Sherlock Holmes; Cinderella; the myth of the exiled princess; the myth of being in constant mortal danger; the myth of being so unhappy that you long to be anywhere but where you are...and then are rescued by your hero, in the sudden fulfilment of a fantasy. Since I think myths are the heart of anime's appeal, these strong myths are a big plus for me.

The backgrounds and animation are good, if nothing special. Animation is by Telecom, with help from Bones. The show is slated for 22 episodes and is based on a manga that ran to eight volumes between 2002 and 2007. The adaptation is by Tsuchiya Rikei, who also did Major and KimiKiss (as well as Kirarin Revolution).

Director Tomizawa did Futakoi 1 and Kanban Musume, and the sharp direction of the latter is very much in evidence here. The story is told very economically, completing three adventures and setting up the main characters in the first episode. Largely thanks to Hirano Aya's great emoting, we really get a feel of the main character, in moments of great travail.

I'm a fan of Aya's, but even I found her other starring role this spring, Kaoru in Zettai Karen Children, a bit over the top, especially in episode one. In Nijuu-mensou, she returns to the emotion that I think is her greatest strength. I first took notice of her as Layla in NANA, where she almost made me weep every time she spoke. And then I noticed hints of this power in Suzumiya Haruhi, Manabi Straight, and even Sumomomo Momomo. She is not the most naturalistic actress, and some people can't get past what they see as overacting. But for me, she has an ability to communicate real emotion that few other seiyuu can approach.

I particularly liked both the OP, by 369, and the ED, by Aya. From my point of view, Aya's singing is getting better and better. She gives the song energy and rhythm, conveys emotion, has good phrasing, and hits all the notes dead on, unlike many seiyuu/singers, including Aya herself in the past. The OP and ED are both on YouTube.

Now, I appear to be the only blogger with much enthusiasm for this show, or for the ED, so your mileage may vary, but I was involved and entertained throughout.

Summary

The Thief With Twenty Faces robs the rich of their treasures. He warns them ahead of time, but still manages to succeed in every heist. He has promised to steal a rich man's golden casket, so the man fills his house with police. The Thief succeeds by infiltrating the guards and then having his zeppelin rip the top off the house, allowing him to escape -- and incidentally revealing an illegal treasure the man has hidden in his attic.

Chizuko is a young girl who is fascinated with the Thief. She lives in a grand house. But she seems to be refusing to eat: she dumps her tea on the table and leaves her cakes untouched. Her parents appear to be baffled by her behavior.

Back in her room, we see that Chizuko is clearly depressed and upset. She wants to be anywhere but where she is. At the next meal, her father grabs her violently and tries to force her to eat, but fails. After every meal, however, the butler comes in to give her something to eat, and she eats it.

We finally learn that these are not Chizuko's real parents, but her father's brother and his wife. Her parents have died somehow. Her aunt and uncle and the butler come into her room to give her some soup, but she refuses even that, after tasting one spoonful. Finally, the butler drops his disguise and reveals himself as the Thief. He tells the aunt and uncle that the food they are offering is good only for pigs, so they should eat it themselves. He produces a bottle of aconite poison and says it is the aunt's "secret spice." The aunt (and uncle?) have been trying to poison Chizuko so that they can inherit her father's company and wealth.

The Thief asks Chizuko if she wants to go with him. She says she does, and runs to him, desperately. Hirano Aya's wild little gulp as she races for him is a magic moment. But once in his car, they have to outrace the police, which they do with the help of a couple of accomplices who join them in the car after blocking the police. One of the accomplices gives Chizuko the nickname Chiko. Then they are chased by a man/youkai called the Tiger, but at the last minute, as they are on a train track with a train bearing down on them, the Thief's zeppelin arives and they climb up a rope ladder to safety, as the train apparently demolishes the Tiger. The Thief observes to Chiko that the world looks small from up in the sky, and they are now off to another country.

We have a good set-up, and now it seems that Chiko will develop into a star member of the Thief's gang. Whether the show fulfils its promise or not will depend on how well they develop the characters, especially Chiko, and how well the capers retain their freshness. The show could look like just a kids' detective show, or it could develop more of the psychological depth I saw glimmers of in episode one.

By the way, I'm not planning to blog this show. I just wanted to express my feelings about the first episode.

Spring Anime: 24 First Looks

After one episode, Kurenai, Macross Frontier, and Vampire Knight are at the top of my list. In fact, there are lots of watchable shows, but unless Kurenai steps up, there is nothing really in my drama sweet spot. Here are some reactions to first episodes (which can be misleading).

Kure-nai -- the director of Red Garden serves up one of the few apparently serious dramas we have going for us this season. Great VA performances from young actress Yuuki Aoi as the tsundere seven-year-old, and from Sawashiro Miyuki as her (male) protector.

Macross Frontier -- So what if it's "mecha"? It has characters and relationships, as well as the fighting, and I enjoyed it.

Vampire Knight
-- Excellent look and intriguing story, with wonderful character design and great voices (Horie Yui, Miyano Mamoru, Kishio Daisuke).

Wagaya no O-Inari-sama -- Promising little show featuring a double-gendered fox god/dess played by Nakamura Yuuichi and Yukana. Young Hayami Saori is excellent as a miko, and godly doing the ED.

Allison & Lillia -- I enjoyed the first episode, which developed at a leisurely pace, but had a bit of a feel of Last Exile about it.

The Tower of Druaga: Aegis of Uruk -- Not my thing, but this deserves to be popular. Clear homages to Gurren-Laggan.

SA - Special A
-- Gotou Yuuko and Fukuyama Jun star in this school comedy, which has echoes of Ouran HS Host Club in its atmosphere and look. It all depends on whether the next episodes develop the characters further than their quirks.

Monochrome Factor -- Whew, this one snuck up on me. Excellent voice work, especially from Suwabe Junichi and Ono Daisuke. Snappy direction by Kou Yuu (Loveless). Yaoi factor.

Kanokon -- Erotic fantasy featuring a fox girl and the shouta she loves. The first episode worked for me, especially since the fox girl is played by Kawasumi Ayako and the shouta by Noto Mamiko.

To Love-ru -- Good quality ecchi from an entertaining manga.

Neo-Angelique: Abyss -- Seems like a good version of the franchise. Some of the staff from Corda D'Oro give it a nice look and feel, the men look good, and Endou Aya makes a good Angie.

DC2SS -- I was so frustrated with the lead guy during the first season of DC2, but I watched episode 1 of the new season, and the relaxed magic of the DaCapo atmosphere took hold. I'm back to see if Takagaki Ayahi can get the guy.

Soul Eater -- Wonderful art direction. Great fight animation. Within the limitations of a formula, the characters are interesting and a bit unique. The wooden-voiced heroine puts some people off.

Code Geass R2 -- I'm not a fan, but the first episode of the new season at least made sense to me. King Lulu? CC's homeworld?

Zettai Karen Children -- The director of Hayate brings Hirano Aya on board for a new show in Hayate's timeslot. Three ten-year-olds with superpowers and bad attitudes is a good premise. Aya's high-tension Haruhi-as-Konata version of the main girl takes some getting used to, but rivets your attention. Three girls of about ten do a great job singing the OP. The ED is by the stars: Aya, Shiraishi Ryouko, and Tomatsu Haruka. [Thanks to Shana-nee for the correction.]

Crystal Blaze -- A mystery involving women who seem to be made of crystal. Shows promise. Miki Shinichirou in fine voice. Directed and animated by the team that did Saikano.

Real Drive -- A slow and beautiful Production IG start. Story by Shirow Masamune (Ghost in the Shell).

Blassreiter -- Starts well, with good racing and fighting scenes and an intriguing plot. But some people fear the Gonzo decline.

Itazura na Kiss -- I'm not sure whether it's because I've already seen the Taiwan drama based on the same manga, but this dragged for me the first time I watched it. But I got it more the second time. And Mizuki Nana seems to make the lead role her own.

Amatsuki -- Fukuyama Jun suddenly finds himself back in Edo times with Paku Romi. A good, if slow, start that feels as if it might go somewhere.

Kyou kara Mao 3 -- I started watching episode 1, but quit partway though. Nishimura Junji (Simoun, true tears) is directing it, but it felt bland to me.

Nabari no Ou -- Stylish character design in a story involving ninja fighting. Not my thing, but may be others'.

xxxHOLIC: Tsugi
-- I was enjoying its strengths until I realized I had no desire to spend one more second with Fukuyama Jun's wimpy male protagonist.

Kamen no Maid Guy -- I got through about ten minutes before quitting. I didn't really get it.

Hayami Saori: The Next Great Seiyuu/Singer

Okay, I know I'm going overboard here, but I just saw the first episode of Wagaya no Oinari-sama, and I have to enthuse over Hayami Saori 早見沙織, who plays the young priestess Kou.

Not only does she do an excellent job with her simple but important role, but she elevates herself to the top of my seiyuu/singer list with her singing of the ED.

Hayami-san is only 16 and has had only one previous major role, Momoka in Touka Gettan. This role demands a similar pure, young voice, and she has it in spades. Her voice is as clean and certain as a drop of water falling in a forest pool. I would choose her over any other seiyuu for a role like this.

But her seiyuu voice is less than the half of it. She is an outstanding singer, with a sureness and musicality that are overwhelming. Her ED for Touka Gettan is something I play over and over again. And her ED for this show is just as good.

The story is that when she recorded the Touka Gettan ED, she had it pretty well down in one take, and when she emerged from the recording booth, the staff all spontaneously applauded. Columbia already seems to have signed her to a recording contract.

Besides Momoka in Touka Gettan, her other roles have been as a student in ep1 of Clannad, as Sumire in Koharu Biyori, as a student in ep12 of Ghost Hound, and as "sweetheart" in ep5 of Shigofumi.

Hayami-san works for I"m Entertainment, an agency that was rocked by a sex scandal last year and lost several seiyuu. One post on 2channel describes Hayami Saori as "I"m Entertainment's secret weapon" for recovering from the scandal.

EDIT: Her 2channel thread is not growing that quickly, but it makes up in enthusiasm what it lacks in numbers. One person said he never expected to hear such good singing in an anime song. Another said that such a skilful, fresh seiyuu voice was good to hear, but that her singing made him a fan.

Hirano Aya Tokyo Mini-Live -- Report

Hirano Aya performed a "mini-live" in Tokyo on March 15. Reports (Animate, axive) say that the crowd was enthusiastic and Aya was at her best.

One report commented on the "rough" sound of the excellent four-piece band, not like a seiyuu band at all, and said that the beginning of a "Hirano sound" was starting to come clear. The report said that you could hear her musicality coming through, both in the hard and in the soft vocals. In her blog, Aya has been extremely enthusiastic about this band. (click photos to enlarge)

This was the second in a two-concert series. Aya had performed the same show in Osaka a couple of weeks earlier. The show was a commemoration of her three fall singles, and was only open to those who had bought all three. They came from all over Japan -- Hokkaido to Kagoshima -- to pack the little 1300-seat hall at Shibuya O-East.

There were a number of women in the audience, both in the front row and in special booths set up at the back, outside the sea of roaring testosterone. Aya said she has been getting more fan-letters from women and was very happy about that.

the band

In the talk portion of the show, Aya commented that she had been tempted to refuse the seiyuu awards she received, since she didn't feel she deserved them, but realized that they were honoring all the people who worked to create Lucky Star. She said she is still just developing as an artist and promised to do her best to get better.

Aya is a believer in fortune-telling and said that a palmist had told her last year would be a hard one, but this year and the next ten years would be excellent. She talked about her roles in Zettai Karen Children (which starts this Sunday morning) and in Chiko, Heiress of the Phantom Thief (Nijuu Mensou no Musume), which starts the following Saturday. She said that in Chiko, people would hear an Aya they had never heard before, and that she wanted people to be surprised it was her when they saw the credits.

She also mentioned her next single, unnamed world, the ED to Chiko, which comes out 23 April. She will have a new idol DVD coming out on the 25th, too.

As for anime, besides the two series starting soon, the one-episode OVAs Lupin 3: Black and Red and Fist of the North Star: The Legend of Toki are already out. And it has now been announced that she has a role in Amuri of Star Ocean, a three-ep OVA starting 23 May.

Set list:
01. LOVE★GUN
02. NEOPHILIA
03. MonStAR
04. Love Song
05. forget me nots…
06. GLITTER
ENCORE
01. Medley(Breakthrough~Ichiban Hoshi~Bouken Desho Desho?~Ashita no prism~Kazeyomi Ribon~Yorokobi no Uta)
02. MonStAR

And finally, here are assorted shots from Aya's blog over the past few weeks: 1. practicing drums in the studio. I'm not sure we'll hear her play them, but she was spending time learning; 2. waiting backstage on a cold day, with a handwarmer pack against her stomach; 3. cherry blossoms at a shrine; 4. forgot to shoot herself in this week's Midtown TV Princess Aya costume.

Yukana -- Great Voice, Strong Pheromones

Yukana is both an outstanding seiyuu and a controversial personality. Her voice has great range, from Cure White in Precure Max Heart to Dominura in Simoun, and from Mashiro in Mai-Otome to C.C. in Code Geass. Recently, she seems to be centring on roles that are like her: strong, sexy, and mature.

She stars this season as the female aspect of a fox god in Wagaya no Oinari-sama. In an interview about the part, she says she plays Kuu very god-like when she is in the shrine, but more active and inquisitive in the house. The show has its heartwarming parts and its slapstick parts, she says, but in the end gives you a warm feeling, like being in a hot bath.

2channel keeps talking of "pillow business" (i.e., using sex to get roles). There is no proof of this. Her talent should make it unnecessary, and at least one of the accusations has been shown to have no basis. But one look at her photos and you realize why people might make such accusations: the pheromones seem to leap right through the screen at you. (click photos to enlarge)

I first became aware of her as Dominura, the masculine older pilot/priestess in Simoun, who was involved in the upper reaches of the political world, and fell in love with a younger girl.

The role she is best known for recently is the mysterious and sexy C.C. in Code Geass. Before that, she starred in Mai-Otome as Mashiro.

And her most famous role is probably Tessa Testarossa in Full Metal Panic. But she has become very popular with directors: she had eleven roles last year, and has had five already this year, including being type-cast as a succubus in Tower of Druaga: Aegis of Uruk, which debuts this Friday.

Here are some of her roles: Moldiver (Ozora Mirai), Azuki-chan (Azuki-chan), Wedding Peach (Angel Lily), Melty Lancer (Sylvia Nimrod), Cardcaptor Sakura (Li Meilin), Full Metal Panic (Tessa), Futari wa Precure Max Heart (Cure White), Black Cat (Rinslet Walker), My-Otome (Mashiro), Simoun (Dominura), Code Geass (C.C.), Soukou no Strain (Lotti), Mononoke (Kayo), Wagaya no Oinarisama (Kuugen Tenko). You can see a full list on her Anime News Network page. She has also done over 60 games and over 30 drama CDs, according to Japanese Wikipedia.

She began her anime career at 18, in her last year of high school, starring in Moldiver in 1993. As a girl, she had apparently been weak and sickly, but there seems to be no evidence of that now. She comes from Chiba, and when she finished high school there, she started studying law at prestigious Keio University in Tokyo -- but dropped out to be a seiyuu. She often seems to have a "cat that swallowed the canary" look, and gives off an air of knowingness.

In the later 1990s, she began a singing career that has tailed off in recent years, although she continues to do some live performances, such as one coming up on 22 April in Shibuya (Tokyo). She has even written lyrics for other singers.

She and Ikezawa Haruna (Mao Oneechan in KimiKiss) are friends, and have had a radio show together called "Canary Lunar Market" (yukana-haruna market). You can find the current broadcast -- which may be the final broadcast -- from this page. Click the red button under their pictures.

But controversy has swirled around her for years. She is apparently not the easiest person to get along with, and in 2000, she was accused of having ruined one sound director's marriage. Some people say that in fact the sound director in question was a bachelor, so who knows what actually happened. She took some months off to go and do English study in the US, then returned and changed her stage name from Nogami Yukana to just Yukana.

Then in 2004 she was chosen to play Four Murasame in a new Zeta Gundam movie, and the older seiyuu who had played the role in the '80s (Shimazu Saeko) went ballistic, covering her home page with closely-argued tirades against the sound director who had chosen Yukana.

The rumor arose that Yukana had got the role because of a relationship with the sound director. 2channel Gundam fans sided with the previous seiyuu and although their ire was against the sound director, Yukana was tarnished. It turned out that many of the seiyuu in that show were new, and the director just wanted new actors, but maybe was loathe to tell the old ones this directly. Yukana left the public eye for a while. Japanese Wikipedia now talks about the whole situation here.

In 2007, she was slated to play Yumiko in Touka Gettan, but withdrew at the last minute in favor of Itou Miki, who had played the role in the hentai foreunner of the show, Moonlight Lady. Her agency, Sigma Seven, said they had double-booked her and apologized, but one wonders if she was trying to avoid another controversy.

Yuka-nyan is friends with numerous seiyuus, including Koshimizu Ami, who plays alongside her in Code Geass. The picture above right is of them having tea together last spring.

Not that she needs them, but she did attend "pheromone dinners" with other seiyuu (Koshimizu Ami, Shimizu Ai, et al.) where a group of women friends got together to eat a meal including lots of meat. At right is a pic of her (left) and Shimizu Ai taking pictures with their cell-phones at another tea party.
