Seiyuu Sawashiro Miyuki -- One of a Kind

SAWASHIRO Miyuki 沢城みゆき is a great seiyuu and a strange bird. She spends her time reading, likes classical music, dresses older than her 23 years, and speaks gently, but with great confidence in her own opinions.

She started in anime at 14 (born in Tokyo 1985.06.02), and has been working ever since. She graduated from university earlier this year, and now is branching out into live theatre.

At an age at which other seiyuu are considered newcomers, she is a seasoned veteran, with 110 anime roles under her belt, including her first role of Puchiko in Di Gi Charat, and her most famous role, that of Shinku in Rozen Maiden. She was Claire in Red Garden, Hagino in Blue Drop, and Shinkuro in Kurenai, and has important roles in three new shows that start this week.

She describes herself as "terribly laid-back," and speaks softly and carefully in interviews (such as this one). She seems fairly serious and controlled, but has a dry wit and a wonderful happy laugh.

But she tells people exactly what she thinks, without regard for age or experience. Some older seiyuus (Kaneda Tomoko, for one) have been taken aback by her pointed criticisms. So has the director of Kurenai, who said plaintively that she kept changing the lines he had written.

Miyukichi (her nickname) is among the most versatile of all current seiyuus. She can play everyone from little girls through young men to mature women, and from flying cat-boys to sleepy nature goddesses, and her voice can be everything from sweet to harsh to sexy.

Some people call her a jack of all trades and master of none. I think that is because she is so versatile that you can't identify her with one particular voice. But it is true that there is something so under-control about her work that it can seem dry. She is not so much a pretty voice as a fine vocal technician who is a good actress and becoming a better one.

roles
The role that really turned me on to her work was Hagino in Blue Drop (2007), but she is most famous for Puchiko in Di Gi Charat (her debut role, 1999) and Shinku in Rozen Maiden (2004). (mouseover photos for captions, click to enlarge)

puchiko - di gi charat mint blancmanche - galaxy angel shinku - rozen maiden

Her Claire in Red Garden (2006) was also outstanding, as was her Shibasaki in Library Wars (2008).

She was Mint Blancmange in Galaxy Angel, Kagura in Onegai My Melody, Ibara-hime in Otogijushi Akazukin, Shinkuro in Kurenai, Reika in Goshuushou-sama Ninomiya-kun, and the landlady in Hidamari Sketch. I could go on and on. There is a list of some of her roles at the end of this piece. Here is a video digest of her main roles.

claire - red garden hagino - blue drop shinkuro - kurenai

She has prominent roles in three interesting shows this fall season: she plays Kotoha in Yozakura Quartet (starts Thursday), Satoru in Linebarrels of Iron (starts Friday), and Aoba in Kannagi (starts Saturday).

career
at the audition for di gi charat, when she was 13Sawashiro-san's career began in 1999, when she was 13. At a public audition for the lead role in Di Gi Charat, she impressed the producers so much that they gave her the role of little Puchiko in the show. Even at the audition (YouTube), you can hear the energy, range, and precision of her voice, and can see how self-possessed she seems for someone so young.

She kept working, getting more roles year by year through high school, then burst forth with 24 roles in 2006. That has dropped back to a somewhat more manageable 16 and 17 roles in 2007 and 2008. Her agency is Mausu Promotions, which also represents Ono Daisuke (whom Miyukichi calls "O.D.") and Ishida Akira.

controversy
Through this past summer, 2channel has had a running argument about comments made by Matsuo Kou, the director/writer of Kurenai, in which Miyukichi starred as the male protagonist Shinkuro. The director said she did not address him with the proper respect and kept changing the script.

But listening to the radio show on which he said it (nicovideo), it sounds to me as if his comments were made in good humor. And now Matsuo-san has chosen her to star in his new show, Yozakura Quartet. In fact, she appears to be his favorite seiyuu, having acted in his other shows Rozen Maiden and Red Garden. He probably first met her when he was a unit director on Galaxy Angel.

personality
Tanaka Rie says that on the set of Rozen Maiden, Miyukichi always seemed to be the chairman of the group, even though the other seiyuus were older than she was.

And she is evidently fairly free with her opinions of others' approaches. "Sawashiro-san really scolds me," Kaneda Tomoko once said.

There is a series of features on the Blue Drop DVDs (YouTube) in which Miyukichi interviews director Ohkura Masahiko (left) and mangaka Yoshitomo Akihito -- and manages to talk as much as either of them.

She gives the feeling that she is outwardly mild, but inwardly clever and challenging. She seems an irresistible force, like water.

She dresses older than her age, and sometimes wears seriously frumpy outfits. She does not always look as pretty as she is -- although I like all these photos, anyway.

And she has had many different hairstyles, some fairly awful, as she makes extreme and but usually fruitless efforts to disguise how (beautifully) broad her face is:

Bits and pieces:
  • she does not eat meat, but does eat fish.
  • she has one sibling, a younger brother.
  • she likes classical music.
  • she went to a college in Tokyo, but we don't know which one or what she majored in.
  • her English pronunciation is passable, and she has spoken English in a couple of her roles, for example in the second ED for Red Garden.
  • when she played the eldest sister in Kokoro Toshokan, she was the youngest among the seiyuus.

friends
Her closest friend in the business appears to be Sanada Asami (below, left), who won that long-ago audition to play Di Gi Charat. If you watch video #4 of the audition, Asami is #12 and Miyukichi is #15. They have now been together in several shows over the years.

with Sanada Asami Red Garden cast - Shintani Ryouko, Tsuji Ayumi, Tomisaka Akira, Sawashiro Miyuki, Fukuen Misato (l-r)

She is also supposed to be friendly with such seiyuu as Nazuka Kaori, Koshimizu Ami, and Sanpei Yuuko, as well as Kugimiya Rie, Kobayashi Yu, Tamura Yukari, Tsuji Ayumi, and Kimura Haruka. She and Yukarin have been seen in close conversation at an event, knee to knee, stroking each other's hair. She has also been friendly with Gotou Saori, her co-star in Rakugo Tennyou Oyui, although there are rumours that they have fallen out for some reason.

Kurenai cast - Masu Nozomi (Ginko), Yuuki Aoi (Murasaki), Miyuki with Seki Tomokazu and Tanaka Atsuko

talent
Many people have recognized her talent, but a quote from top seiyuu Seki Tomokazu stands out: "Make no mistake, this is a being who will take the seiyuu world somewhere."

She is an excellent vocal technician, with a wide range of voices and intonations and the ability to use them at will -- despite the fact that she never did go to seiyuu school. And now she is concentrating on dramatic acting, as you can hear in Red Garden or Blue Drop or Kurenai.

I'm sure a director can feel confident that she will produce a good voice for almost any character. But I think she's still finding something that will make her roles more memorable. I have a hunch that Miyukichi has only just begun, and will be showing us more and more in the years ahead.

She joined the comic theatre group Gekidango late last year, and has been in three of their productions. To see a bit of what she is doing on the live stage, go to this page and click the little TV screen near the top right of the page for a brief video. 2008 So Far -- My Favorite Shows

As I see my taste drifting further and further from that of a lot of other anime fans, I thought I'd just run through the year and figure out which anime have been my favorites so far.

My favorite show of the summer season was definitely Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto -- Natsu no Sora. Lots of people have criticized the photographic backgrounds and simplified human figures, but I think both of those work brilliantly. The music has been outstanding, especially the OP by Thyme, and the ED and insert songs by micc.

The story built up slowly, letting us learn about the characters from their words, their actions, and their silences. And the final four episodes have been moving and deep: events and feelings reaching an almost spiritual peak, with nary a cliche in sight.

Hanazawa Kana's voice is not to everyone's taste -- one person has said it sounded like a ten-year-old's -- but for me she has one of the most moe voices in anime, one that is always able to move me. In this show, the combination of her character's moe vulnerability, powerful magic, and strong determination were a heady brew.

My favorite show of the year, if it isn't Natsu no Sora, may well be true tears, the conflicted romance drama that aired last winter. Takagaki Ayahi gave a taste of just how good her acting is, and she confirmed that with her performance in the second season of Da Capo 2. The complex emotions of all the characters were both interesting and powerful.

From the spring season, I enjoyed Daughter of Twenty-Faces and Macross Frontier for most of their runs, but both ultimately let me down.

Hirano Aya's voice work was brilliant in Daughter of Twenty-Faces: a bit stilted, but full of passion. And the fantasy 1950s Japan setting was unique. But the story, after a first half that was strong and moving, began to spin its wheels. Twenty-faces' numerous deaths and resurrections, and Chiko's numerous skin-of-the-teeth escapes, eventually became too much even for me.

I kept defending the show as being something like Batman, but now I remember that I never liked Batman that much. I still love both the OP by 369 and the ED by Hirano Aya.

There's no getting around it, Macross Frontier has wonderful music. The BGM by Kanno Youko is great, and all the OPs, EDs and insert songs are moving. May'N's strong voice and Nakajima Megumi's touching one work beautifully. And the battle scenes, complete with music and light shows, were sometimes brilliant.

But the story just broke down for me. It was all logical, but it became convoluted and pointless. And the lead male character was too hard to read. I thought they wrote Alto poorly, making him inconsistent just for the sake of preserving the Macross romantic triangle.

The gentle yuri comedy Candy Boy was a revelation, giving us more in its 15-minute episodes than most anime do in twice that time. The feelings of the characters are conveyed beautifully by the plot and the excellent voice-acting of Nabatame Hitomi and Yuzuki Ryouka.

I have to mention a couple of other spring shows. I just watched episode 24 of Itazura na Kiss, and ended up with tears rolling down my cheeks. The show often tried my patience through its run, with puerile and repetitive humor and a lead male who took around 20 episodes to stop being a complete jerk. But it was a fine shoujo anime, in the end, with some uniqueness about it, especially in the final few episodes. And the ending is supposedly what the mangaka -- who died tragically before finishing the manga -- originally planned.

Another shoujo show, Vampire Knight, did even more for me, with its strong male voice-acting from Miyano Mamoru and Kishio Daisuke, and its atmosphere soaked in blood and suppressed sensuality. The manga is better, but when was it otherwise? I'm looking forward to season two, which starts next Monday night.

Kure-nai was a good show, with outstanding voice-acting all round. The basic situation, and the personality of the little girl, Murasaki, were fascinating. But it also seemed to lack direction, perhaps because the motivations of the characters were not shown enough: I knew what they were supposed to be, but I couldn't feel them. And sometimes people did things I just couldn't believe.

Three episodes of Kara no Kyoukai have popped up through the year, and every one of them has been excellent. This is how to plot an anime, with everything leading in the same direction: direct to and from the hideous murders that are the heart of the show. Sakamoto Maaya is at her best.

Bounen no Xamdo snuck up on me. I didn't know anything about it until several episodes in. But it seems to be a very well made shounen adventure in the tradition of Eureka Seven or Last Exile. It suffers from the standard puerile humor and the presence of silly monsters (my personal bugbear), but the story has worked so far and the voice-acting is outstanding, particularly from Orikasa Fumiko and from Sanpei Yuuko, who played Renton in Eureka Seven, but is the Eureka character here.

I also want to mention another show from last winter, Spice & Wolf -- not for the show, but for the voice-acting of Koshimizu Ami, who stars as Horo, the ageless wolf-goddess who usually takes the form of a teenaged girl. Her voice wraps itself around a very complex character quite brilliantly. For me, hers is the best seiyuu performance of the year so far.

You may have noticed the new banner image at the top of the page. It is from an old painting of two sisters who are important characters in the last ten chapters of the Tale of Genji, which was written by a Japanese court lady around 1000AD, and may be the first true novel in the world. The sisters lived with their father, a disgraced prince, in a little house near the bridge at Uji, south of Kyoto. Because they lived near the bridge, they were called the "bridge princesses," or "hashihime."

Takagaki Ayahi on Wrestling Radio Show?

I'd read that Takagaki Ayahi (Noe in true tears) was supposed to be a fan of pro wrestling, but now she is going to co-host a wrestling-focused radio program.

The show is called "Hustle Every Night" (夜ナ夜ナハッスル), and is produced by a wrestling group called "Hustle Fighting Opera." The purpose of the show is to cater to female and young fans.

The group photo shows her with her co-host, the president of the wrestling group (a wrestler himself), and the group's "PR lady." There is a little video of the press conference.

I've been disappointed that Takagaki-san is not getting more roles, but at least here she has a chance to make a bit of money. I thought she was outstanding as a voice and as an actress both in true tears and in Da Capo II Second Season (in which she played Otome).

A number of seiyuu are said to be fans of pro wrestling, but I always thought that was a bit of a joke. Perhaps not.

I found this info on her blog, where I was looking at a charming photo of her standing on the breakwater that features so prominently in true tears. She was on a visit to Toyama, where the anime was set. Ayahime in real life appears to be a tiny dynamo.

This fall, Ayahime has two comparatively minor roles, one in Gundam00, and one in Kyou no Go no Ni (Today in Class 5-2).

Seiyuu Romance -- Do Nana-chan and Hana-chan Have Boyfriends?

Fair warning: this post is pure tabloid fluff.

This summer, we have had a couple of seiyuu romance rumors, one of them old but proven.

1. A photo-booth photo has turned up showing Hanazawa Kana 花澤香菜 with her boyfriend in 2006.

2. 2channel has been playing with a rumor that Mizuki Nana 水樹奈々and Sakurai Takahiro 櫻井孝宏 are an item.

Hanazawa Kana may have the most moe voice in anime. She is starring in the wonderful Mahoutsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto this summer, and was Ryouko in Zegapain, Potemayo in Potemayo, and Sora in Sketchbook. For anyone who isnt familiar with her amazing voice, here is a compilation of her roles, from YouTube.

The story about her came out first in 2006, when she was working on Zegapain. A guy posted about his seiyuu girlfriend on 2channel, and when challenged about it, produced the photo at the right. (click photos to enlarge)

The guy appears to have been Ichiyama Tatsuki, who had also been a child actor, like Kana-chan. Photos of both of them below, from a few years earlier, when they were child actors together. The relationship is now supposedly over. And why wouldn't it be? Being an actor, the guy should have realized that you don't reveal details of a young celebrity's love-life.

Here are a few photos of Kana-chan, dating from when she was around 15 (she is now 19):

Mizuki Nana is the #1 seiyuu/singer. She is just finishing starring roles in Itazura na Kiss and Allison to Lillia. The rumors about her and Sakurai Takahiro (Suzaku in Code Geass, the Medicine Seller in Mononoke) are based largely on one photo (below left) showing them with matching rings. More shots from the same photo-shoot below right.

The likelihood of this rumor being true is fairly small, but 2channel has run with it, adding more details from things known about them to support the possibility: they both like antiques, they both like to shop, they both scuba-dive, they both are fans of the Hanshin Tigers baseball team, they both like to wander around the temples of Kyoto, they both like the band Maroon5. And, from the photo below, you can see that their money-purses are similar:

Not much to go on, but it wouldn't be the worst match. Nana-chan is 28, Sakurai 34. Unless Sakurai is gay (he plays Misaki in Junjou Romantika). From observation, I've always suspected it was at least as likely that there are gay male seiyuus as gay female ones, but who knows?

2channel Still Crazy -- 30 Hirano Aya Threads in the top 60

I guess 2channel being crazy isn't news, but I've never seen anything like this: of the top 60 most recently active threads in the 2channel seiyuus forum, 30 are about Hirano Aya. Normally, each seiyuu has only one discussion thread.

And here I thought the madness was dying down. What makes it even stranger is that many of the threads seem to be pro-Aya. This doesn't mean she's the 2channelers' favorite -- or least favorite -- seiyuu, just that a lot of people are fascinated by her.

I don't mean to malign 2channelers in general. Most posts in most threads are sensible posts by knowledgeable otaku. Aya just seems to attract the crazies on both sides. Some posts are just swear words, and one guy posts "good night" to her every night. I've been reading the Sawashiro Miyuki thread recently, and it is a lot tamer. And less popular.

Some thread names with (thread count) and post count:
  • Hirano Aya antis = disgusting otaku lolicon virgins (1) 46
  • Is Hirano Aya really the best seiyuu for Haruhi? (1) 97
  • Hirano Aya has no boyfriend -- for sure (1) 102
  • Stop posting Hirano Aya threads in the baseball forum, Aya maniacs (1) 28
  • Is it true that Hirano Aya lies in her blog? (1) 161
  • Because there are too many anti-Hirano people, I have become her fan (1) 61
  • Strange ways of extending anti-Hirano threads (1) 27
  • Watching the Olympics with Hirano Aya-chan (1) 22
  • Tyranno-Aya (1) 154
  • Hirano antis are shitty pigs, for real, lol (1) 26
  • Aaya Onee-san (1) 16
  • I think Hirano Aya's live event was great (1) 96
  • Hirano Aya (20) has such small breasts that she shouldn't wear a bikini (1) 279
  • Thread for Hirano Aya fans and undecideds (antis and Aya maniacs not allowed) (1) 97
  • If Hirano Aya works at it, she could have sex (1) 112
  • Hirano Aya>>>>>>>Tamura Yukari>>>Mizuki Nana (1) 225
  • Anti- anti-Hirano Aya thread (1) 68
  • NHK recognizes Hirano Aya as tops in the seiyuu world (1) 183
  • There would be nothing better than Hirano Aya playing a madwoman (1) 110
  • Is Hirano Aya actually the most popular seiyuu? (1) 170
  • The number of people who just can't stop themselves from loving Hirano Aya is... (1) 20
  • Hirano Aya (145) 163 (the main thread, which is usually the only one)
  • Hirano Aya is a latter-day Matsuda Seiko (1) 71
  • Hirano Aya antis = virgin lolicon disgusting otaku idiots (1) 173
  • The deterioration of Hirano Aya (1) 89
  • Hirano Aya antis are just jealous (1) 179
  • Hirano Aya isn't a virgin (1) 201
  • Hirano Aya-san in a ren-ai game! (1) 93
  • Mizuki Nana completely loses to Hirano Aya (1) 613
  • Hirano Aya (125) 281 (an old orphaned thread that someone started using)
I think "Tyranno-Aya" is the most amusing thread title. I haven't sampled all these threads, but the ones you would expect to be stupid seem to be...stupid. If you can picture pro- and anti-Hirano forces posting mutual insults and unsupported claims, you get the picture.

Speaking of pictures, here are some recent ones of Aya -- from her blog (click to enlarge):

1. at Ani-Summer live, waiting for the lift to take her up to the stage. The lift failed during rehearsal...but succeeded when it counted. She did two songs: Love Gun and Unnamed World.

2. At Animelo, after her set, with her band; "having worked so hard I look like an idiot;" and with May'N (who sings Sheryl's songs in Macross Frontier):

3. Snacking when there's no time for a meal (on a mugwort ohagi); with a gift from the mangaka of Zettai Karen Children; and on her way to the supermarket late at night:

4. The entire contents of Aya's bag, including the contents of her purse, and her scripts (click to enlarge):

With Zettai Karen Children, Nijuumensou no Musume, and Macross Frontier ending soon, Aya will be in three new shows starting in October. She is one of the four stars of the absurd comedy Hyakko (with Orikasa Fumiko, Neya Michiko, and Ochiai Yurika). She is a secondary character in the star-studded mecha show Linebarrels of Iron. And she and Kugimiya Rie star in the school romance Akane-Iro ni Somaru Saka.

46 New Fall Anime -- full previews (story, trailer, staff, cast, etc.)

Vampire Knight - GuiltyWith just over two weeks to go until the new season starts, it's time to think about what's coming. Tastes differ, but the shows I myself am most looking forward to are:

ef - a tale of melodiesHowever, many other shows look interesting, too: shounen romantic monster-fighting in Ga-rei Zero and Yozakura Quartet; a well-animated female buddy show set in Brazil in Michiko to Hatchin; shounen supernatural mystery in both Kurozuka (directed by the director of Death Note) and Chaos:HEAd (adapted by the writer of Death Note); two real mecha shows in Gundam00 II and Kurogane no Linebarrels; and others. And there are sure to be surprises.

Akane-iro ni Somaru Saka
(jp: あかね色に染まる坂, "A Hillside Dyed Red")
In order to protect cute new transfer student Yuuhi Katagiri (Kugimiya Rie), Junichi Nagase is forced to kiss her. She screams, not understanding what is going on, and not knowing that her father has arranged for her to marry him. She doesn’t like him, and his little sister (Hirano Aya) wants her gone. Will they eventually get together?

The cast is great -- and the role is apparently perfect for Kugimiya-san to become even more of a tsundere -- but I am worried by the fact that this is being made by the director and writer of that very awkward show School Days. That they did Amenaideyo before that make me even more worried. From an ero-game.

(jp: キャシャーン SINS)
Casshern is about a cyborg who rises against the robotic armies that have subjugated all of humanity. (ann)

Madhouse is doing a total of five shows this season. This one is directed by the director of some Dragonball movies and Xenosaga, which doesn’t seem promising, but written by the writer of Shakugan no Shana, Witchblade, and Claymore. And that does seem promising.

A veteran cast includes Furuya Tohru, Chou, and Yajima Akiko. Remake of an older anime.

One of the shows I most look forward to. A romantic fantasy drama with great music and great background art. Prequel to last fall's outstanding ef-a tale of memories. As with that show, the seiyuus are direct from minori's ero-game. Only Gotou Mai's name is familiar to me.

But the main man is director Oonuma Shin, working under Shinbo Akiyuki. Writer Takayama Katsuhiko did KgNE and Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora, as well as ef-a tale of memories. Music, as before, is largely by Tenmon, who does music for Shinkai Makoto's animes. Character designer Sugiyama Nobuhiro also acts as animation supervisor.

Hyakko
(jp: ヒャッコ)
A funny manga and an excellent cast, with a director and writer who don't have enough of a track record to be predictable. The comic involves four girls, each amusingly loopy in her own way. Director Fukuda Michio did storyboards for everything from Ayakashi Ayashi to PaniPoni Dash. Writer Tomizawa Yoshihiko created Onmyou Taisenki and did the script for Starship Operators.

Hirano Aya certainly gets my attention, but so do Orikasa Fumiko, Kuwashima Houko, and Neya Michiko (Riza Hawkeye in FMA). These people could create great characters together. And this show marks a kind of return to the limelight for seiyuu Ochiai Yurika, who is most famous so far for ToHeart2, a heartbreaking personal blog updated several times a day, and an enormous number of posts about her on 2channel.

This show marks the return of Yamakan -- director Yamamoto Yutaka. He was an important force behind the Suzumiya Haruhi anime but was fired by Kyoto Animation after four episodes of directing Lucky Star. I think he may be a comic genius -- he did the ED for SHnY, as well as episode 00 and the concert episode, and he also did the Lucky Star OP -- so I am right there for this show. High-school student Sanpeita dreams he is engaged to a beautiful girl. Then one morning, a strange homely girl suddenly breaks through a wall in his bedroom to tell him that she is his bride and that her name is Kemeko. Sanpeita fleees his house and goes to school, but Kemeko follows. And things get stranger when Sanpeita is targeted by something that looks like a rice cooker on the school's rooftop. As Sanpeita and his childhood friend Izumi are being attacked, strange little Kemeko intervenes to save them both. Sanpeita is surprised to learn that Kemeko is really a girl-style powered-combat-suit and that the pilot is a cute girl. A heavily armed and violent cute girl. From a manga.

Great cast stars Kitamura Eri as Sanpeita and the underappreciated Saitou Chiwa as Kemeko.

Director Mizushima Tsutomu did Genshiken, xxxHolic, and Kujibiki Unbalance. Writer Narita Yoshimi is best known for doing all the Precure shows, which I don't find a big recommendation. I fear the cast may be more interesting than the show, but the trailer has something to it.

Written by Tanaka Yoshiki, who wrote later stories in the LoGH series, as well as Ryoko's Case File. Mechanical design by Miyatake Kazutaka, who did almost all the Macross shows, and by Itou Koji, who did FMP and GSD. Great cast, intriguing staff, and an apparent return to good old space opera.

Vampire Knight: Guilty
(jp: ヴァンパイア騎士 Guilty)
Yuuki wants to know more about her true family and her forgotten past. The secret will be revealed. Yuki, Kaname and Zero will see the beginning of a new mystery and a forbidden love. (ann)

If you enjoyed the first series at all, you'll love the second. I've read the blood- and lust-drenched shoujo manga and I was shocked (in a good way) by the part to be covered in the anime. Yes, there is angst. Yes there is fighting. Yes, there is romance. Yes, there is a lot more secret lust and open blood. Great cast. Directed by woman director Sayama Kiyoko, and adapted by Okada Mari (true tears) from the manga.

I won’t miss this one.

seiyuus: Horie Yui, Kishio Daisuke, Miyano Mamoru, Suwabe Junichi, Hoshi Souichirou, Fukuyama Jun, Chiba Susumu.
director: Sayama Kiyoko (Vampire Knight, Skip Beat)

The story revolves around a quartet of teenaged heroes: a super-strong girl named Hime, a mind reader named Ao, a conjurer named Kotoha and an ordinary, powerless boy named Akina. The three girls and Akina protect the city of Sakurashin from supernatural threats. (ANN)

Good staff and cast make this a promising anime. Kou Matso directed Rozen Maiden and Kurenai. Hanada Jukki wrote Rozen Maiden and sola. Younger seiyuu Fukuen Misato and Fujita Saki are coming into their own, and Sawashiro Miyuki and Ono Daisuke are top pros. Tomatsu Haruka is a newcomer zooming to the top. And Tsuruoka Yota is one of the best sound directors around. Add an OP by Savage Genius and and ED by Round Table and this is a show to watch for.

The gentle and caring Kai, who has problems of his own, has the tendency to turn into a lethal killing machine in certain scenarios, like flipping a "switch." As the two do their job, answers to what is behind Kai's strange behavior are revealed. (ann)

Good cast. Good writer. Unknown director. Writer Takahashi Natsuko did Blue Drop, Gakuen Heaven, and Moyashimon, among many other things. Director Odaira Naoki (pronunciation? 大平直樹) is new to directing a full show, having done episodes of Kotetsujin Jeeg and Rental Magica. But the cast of Fukuyama Jun, Sakurai Takahiro, Suwabe Junichi, and Sugita Tomokazu could carry this show a fair way. From a manga.

Fantastic cast includes Nazuka Kaori, Nonaka Ai, and Koshimizu Ami, among others. But the director and writer did Girl's High, which was a poor adaptation of a funny manga. Nice-looking character design, however, by Miyata Naomi, who did the animation for I"s Pure.
