For Hayami Saori Fans Only -- interview screencaps

Some screencaps of Hayami Saori 早見沙織 from the anime TV show Anime Seijin, broadcast Saturday night in Japan.

Hayamin is sometimes called plain. That's only when she is not in motion. She is charming and full of wit and spirit, as these screencaps somehow manage to convey.

Hayamin, now 18, is represented by prominent agency I"m Enterprise. She has been called their "secret weapon," because of her voice-acting and singing skills. She debuted at 15-16 as moe goddess Momoka in Touka Gettan in 2006. She went on to play moe priestess Kou in Wagaya no Oinarisama, big-busted fighter Musubi in Sekirei, soft-spoken college student Saki in Eden of the East, and now big-busted "entertainment-purpose angeloid" Ikaros in Sora no Otoshimono. This last show was the subject of the interview.

Two sets of numerous screencaps were linked to from the current Hayamin thread on 2channel. I've separated out some caps, then added the full original group jpgs:

She's definitely cute, but I never said she didn't have crooked teeth.

Here is a test of an embedded audio player, playing Hayamin's song Namidairo, from Basquash:

Isn't she great? She's gaining some force, while retaining her control and musicality.

Yeah, still not getting the "plain" thing (or "fugly," as a certain other J-Pop blogger that I love calls her). I'm speaking as a straight girl, but I think she's absolutely adorable. That screencap near the end where she's got her hand up in the air is too cute. Thanks for posting these!

Definitely have to agree. As a guy, I think she's pretty cute and I don't think she's fugly or plain at all.

Unfortuately for me, I've only heard her work in Eden, but I thought she did a great job as Saki. And I'm sure she's gonna be around for a long while, so I'm hoping to catch more of her work.

The posters on 2channel are starting to say that she's getting cuter as she matures, lol.

In her first role, as Momoka in Touka Gettan, I didn't remark on her voice too much until ep22. That episode was actually written by seiyuu Noto Mamiko, who I thought provided lines that beautifully suited her voice and delivery, which are not dissimilar to Noto's.

She played the older girl at the desk in the library in the recent ep1 of Sasameki Koto, and I thought did a very effective job. Not only did she communicate the character's emotion, but I didn't even realize it was her until the end credits.

Of her main roles, I liked her best as Saki in Eden, but I actually like her even more as a singer than as a seiyuu. Her ED for Touka Gettan was amazing, showing beautiful tone and musicality.

She acts as back-up singer on the OP and ED for Sora no Otoshimono and shows there just what musical skill she has. Her mother took some jazz-singing classes a few years ago and apparently young Saori-chan tagged along. It shows.

She also sings as part of Eclipse, which does a lot of music in Basquash.

If you want to learn more about her, check out my long blog piece earlier this year.

I don't understand your last sentence. Don't you know that crooked teeth ARE cute?

@Erin -- That's the pic I liked best, too.

@animekritik -- Lol. I should have remembered that I would be among friends here. 2channel keeps talking about her teeth as if they were a negative. I don't think we have to worry about orthodontia, anyway: I doubt a seiyuu would take the chance that changing their teeth might change their sound.

didn't shizuka ito get her teeth fixed? her voice sounds the same, but for some reason she looks strange to me now when she is talking.

@anonymous -- Interesting. Didn't know that. I can't find a mention of it in a quick search, but pictures on this page posted in June make her teeth look perfect, which they certainly weren't previously. I wouldn't know whether it has affected her voice, since I don't hear her much in the shows I watch.

Weird, when I'm looking at Hayamin in those pics she doesn't look like she's pure Japanese...

@anonymous -- I don't see that at all. I think she has a Heian period style of beauty, like the women in this blog's banner. But the idea does remind me of a little disagreement today in her 2channel thread. Someone posted that jp.Wikipedia said her family was only 2-3 generations in Japan. That info has now been edited out from Wikipedia, but looking at the Wikipedia page history, someone had recently posted a Korean name for her, which has also been removed. But my machine translation of the Korean said the surname means "American," so I think that's false. She is now getting popular enough that some antis are crawling out from the woodwork. Her real Japanese name seems to be Matsui Saori. This can be inferred from her mother's blog, which used to show the two of them singing together in a jazz club.

CORRECTION: The episode of Touka Gettan in which Hayamin speaks lines written by Noto Mamiko is episode 21, not 22.

I just rewatched ep21 of Touka Gettan, and it is outstanding, just as I remembered. It is like the key episode to understanding Momoka in the show. Hayami Saori has about 4/5 of the lines, and they are excellent lines that she delivers beautifully. At the age of 16....
