Itou Shizuka: Shizuka-sama

If anyone can make a living as a seiyuu, it's Itou Shizuka.

She does from ten to twenty TV anime a year, plus OVAs and animated films. She does a fair amount of dubbing of foreign TV, movies, and anime.

She does a large number of all-ages games, and plenty of ero-games as well (mainly as "Misaki Rina").

And she has numerous character-song CDs out, to go with a very list of drama CDs. And she does lots of radio shows.

This is a real pro. Her range is wide -- young girls, adult women; cheerful girls, mannish women, cool women, seductive women; young men; animals. Recently her roles have tended to be strong women with something erokakkoii (sexy/cool) about them.

Even more than all this professional excellence, however, her biggest fame may be as a drinker. She plays up her love of alcohol. Her blog picture (at shows her happily holding a bottle of wine.

She is also famous as half of the most publicized yuri seiyuu couple, with Nabatame Hitomi. They may or may not be romantic partners, but they are certainly close friends.

Shizuka-sama began in anime at 21, in early 2003, with an unnamed role in Getbackers. Later that same year, however, she starred in both Texhnolyze (Ran) and Tsukihime (Touno Akiha). She had four roles in anime series that year, and five the next -- then burst out in 2005 with 19 roles.

Her famous roles include Rei in Maria-sama ga Miteru, Wilhelmina in Shakugan no Shana, Tamaki in ToHeart 2, Hina in Hayate, and most recently Morishima-senpai in AmagamiSS.

Hina (Hayate), Wilhelmina (Shana), Tamaki (ToHeart 2)

Rei (Marimite), Nagi (ef melodies), Shinra (Kimi ga Aruji)

This season she is starring in one of the most promising new shows, as the gun-runner Koko Hekmatyar in Jormungand. She continues her role as Misa Grandwood, the big-sisterly adviser in Mouretsu Pirates. And she takes her fated place in the cast of Queen's Blade Revolution, as Liliana.

Koko (Jormungand), Morishima Haruka (AmagamiSS), Liliana (Queen's Blade Rebellion)

What she's like:
  • in appearances on radio, etc., she seems a nice elder sister type
  • has become friends with many other seiyuus.
  • showed her courage by handling a live snake on TV, with a smile
  • likes: liquor, scuba diving, games (MMORPG), watching TV anime, fishing, pro wrestling.

Shizuka and alcohol:
  • says she has sat on a bench drinking beer watching children play in a park.
  • good at leading people on when drunk and getting information from them.
  • tries to kiss pretty women when she's drunk.
  • once took a taxi home but fell asleep on the doorstep.
  • once at a wrap-up party kneed the director and was slapped in the face; settled down after that.
  • drinking buddies with Watanabe Akeno, Ueda Kana.
  • at the Shana wrap-up party, she was embraced by Itou Noizi (illustrator) and Sasakura Ayato (mangaka), and licked Itou Noizi's foot/leg.

Shizuka's background:
  • born 1980.12.15
  • comes from a well-to-do family in the real estate business in Tokyo.
  • was given a Gucci bag in middle school.
  • has an elder brother and sister.
  • poor eyesight. usually wears contact lenses.
  • poor hearing in one ear; almost derailed her career, but she had an operation.
  • once cosplayed visual kei

Becoming a seiyuu:
  • after high school, she was a freeter working part-time in a friend's game centre.
  • got in touch with family for money to go to seiyuu school.
  • originally was attracted by other aspects of being a seiyuu than the actual voice work: the singing and TV appearances and magazine spreads
  • as a student at the Tokyo Announcing Academy, she auditioned for Ken Production and they snapped her up.
  • soon became a singing duo with a seiyuu four years older in the same agency, Nabatame Hitomi.
  • both are still with the same agency

Thanks for the post, she's another singer / VA that I've just become aware of, through Amagami SS. I really like her singing, and am starting to recognize her voice in other shows as well.

Great article Hashi!

Shizuka became one of my favourite seiyuus thanks to Hinagiku, which it's her best role in my opinion.

Her performance of Zankoku na Tenshi no Thesis during the Hinagiku birthday episode was fantastic (same as in the live concert).

I'm still a fan of Shizuka Itou's work, and I wish her all the success she deserves. Too bad the last starring role she was in was as Ryouko Ookami from Ookami-san (no, Amagami SS doesn't count because all the heroines in that show shared the spotlight in their own episodes).

One thing I don't understand is why she ended up with a large amount of eroge roles. She's from a rich family, so wouldn't they object to her acting in what is widely perceived as a form of pornography? Oh, to be sure, she puts in the same effort there as she does in anime series, but it's still the sort of thing that would turn some people away from her.

Always a big fan of her work, Jormungand just makes me love her even more even though her voice is pretty easily recognizable (not sure if that's a good or bad thing). As for Nabacchi w ... (ry
